Samson the ferret

new
The Mayborn Museum is proud to introduce its newest member of the animal collection, Samson the ferret. (We call him Sam for short.)

Sam came to the museum last fall and resides in the Vertebrate Room.

About Ferrets: Ferrets are members of the weasel family Mustelidae, which also includes other Central Texas natives such as skunks, minks, weasels, and Black-footed ferrets as well as non-natives like the wolverine. In an effort to bring in more native species to the collection, Sam is our representative for the Black Footed Ferret which is a historically native species to Central Texas.

The name "ferret" is derived from the Latin furittus, meaning "little thief", a likely reference to the common ferret penchant for secreting away small items. They enjoy a close partnership with man and have been domesticated for an estimated 2,500 years. Sam's favorite activities include sleeping, eating his tasty vitamins and going on walks in the museum and saying hello to his adoring fans. Sam spends his days in his deluxe ferret condo in the Vertebrate Room in the Discovery side of the museum.
