Our featured book for February is Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals. In 1954, the landmark Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, overturned earlier rulings that established separate public schools for white and black students. Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas was the first to integrate its students, a crucial event that helped shape the civil rights movement. Beals was in the first group of integrated students, known as the Little Rock Nine, who began attending Central in 1957. Drawn from her personal diaries, Warriors Don’t Cry is a riveting true account of her experiences during this turbulent time. Bring your lunch and join our discussion Thursday, February 21 at from 12 - 1 pm in the upstairs cafe. Dr. Kim Kellison from Baylor's History Department will be joining in the discussion. |
