story time with miss lori

Miss Lori, the star of PBS Kids, will be at the Mayborn on Saturday, February 23 for a theatrical story time that encourages kids to use their imaginations and become part of the story.  On her popular PBS show, she engages in learning-filled adventures with a diverse mix of real-life kids in a bright and colorful schoolhouse.  They dance and sing, solve problems, do activities, all the while encouraging the viewing audience to join in on the fun.  Miss Lori will meet and greet visitors at noon, followed by story time in the SBC Theater.  Call 254-710-1110 for more information.

book club logo

Our featured book for February is Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals.  In 1954, the landmark Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, overturned earlier rulings that established separate public schools for white and black students.  Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas was the first to integrate its students, a crucial event that helped shape the civil rights movement.  Beals was in the first group of integrated students, known as the Little Rock Nine, who began attending Central in 1957.  Drawn from her personal diaries, Warriors Don’t Cry is a riveting true account of her experiences during this turbulent time.   Bring your lunch and join our discussion Thursday, February 21 at  from 12 - 1 pm in the upstairs cafe.  Dr. Kim Kellison from Baylor's History Department will be joining in the discussion.

Bones: An Exhibit Inside You...last weeks!

Bones: An Exhibit Inside You creates an awareness of our bones through a variety of engaging hands-on activities.  The exhibit is intended to help both children and adults understand the need for healthy bones and teaches ways to accomplish that goal.  Created by the legendary Children's Museum of Indianapolis, Bones will be on display through February 17, 2008 in the Anding Traveling Exhibit Gallery.  Click here to learn more.

Skeletons in the Closet: Selections from the Strecker Collection

We’ve dusted off some of our favorite skeletons from the Strecker Collection to complement our traveling exhibit Bones: An Exhibit Inside You.  Survey unusual skeletons from the collection, including a juvenile elephant skeleton and walrus skull, while learning about animal bones and teeth in this fascinating new exhibition.  Skeletons in the Closet will be on display in the exhibit area next to the SBC Theater through March 3.

Wings Across America presents: Fly Girls of WWII

Fly Girls of WWII honors a brave group of young women who flew military aircraft during World War II.  They were known as the WASP (Women Air Force Service Pilots) and they played an essential, but largely forgotten, role in American history.  See some of their priceless uniforms, pictures, awards, a stirring video, and learn about their invaluable contributions. On exhibition through April 1. Click here to learn more.
