March is Women's History Month
The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of women whose commitment to nature and the planet have proved invaluable to society. Gender discrimination and gender segregation have posed considerable barriers to women's musical talent. Still, many women musicians around the world challenge traditionally held beliefs about gender and women's social status simply by playing a certain instrument or singing a certain song. The Atchison, Kansas birthplace of America's most famous female aviator is now on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to setting the women's altitude record and the women's speed record, Earhart was the first women to fly solo across the Atlantic. An interactive gallery of some of twentieth century America's most famous and influential women. This is a great program to watch online with your daughter. Sincerely,

Secret Stash: 40 Places Where Teens Hide Their Drugs
As shared with me by "your"kids.
The children of today are way more sophisticated than past generations. Unfortunately, this intelligence makes it harder for parents to find the hidden drugs.
- Behind the posters on my bedroom wall. Posters tacked on walls offer a huge area wherein kids can hide drugs. Drugs that can be stored as flat as possible, such as Marijuana, Cocaine or Heroin can be placed inside a small bag and taped to the wall. Posters are then tacked over them to conceal the illegal drugs.
- Hidden behind things on shelves in my room
- Hidden in a slit cut into my mattress
- Hidden in custom sewn pockets in my clothes
- Hidden in dashboard of my car or tiny compartment I made. Sometimes the best place to hide something is in the most obvious place. There are a lot of places where kids can hide drugs in cars-from under the hood to the area below the dashboard, where they can tape tea bags of marijuana or cocaine.
- Hidden in drop down attic doors
- Hidden in pillow cases in my closet
- Hidden in the soles of my shoes
- Hidden in fridge and/or freezer
- Hidden inside empty deodorant can
- Hidden inside my bra and underwear
- Hidden inside my guitar and guitar case
- Hidden inside my make up case and stored luggage
- Hidden inside my retainer case
- Hidden inside my computer, TV, VCR
- Hidden inside my purse, wallet where I made a hidden compartment
- Hidden inside my ski boots and ski pants where I made an extra pocket
- Hidden inside my stereo speakers
- Hidden inside my stuffed animals
- Hidden inside pockets of clothes hanging in the back of the closet or folded in my drawer
- Hidden inside a cut out sock toe and worn in the toes of my shoes
- Hidden inside an empty soda can
- Hidden inside my light fixture
- Hidden inside pen cylinders - Highlighters or pens. Your teenager may look like they are seriously studying. Marijuana or hash may be stored in the space between the nib of the highlighter and the edge of its cap.
- Hidden inside the air conditioning and heating vents
- Hidden inside the battery compartment of an old remote control devise
- Hidden inside storage in the garage
- Hidden inside the toiled paper cylinder
- Hidden inside the handlebars of my bike
- Hidden inside the wall plate of my light switch
- Hidden inside video game boxes, CD cases, DVDs
- Hidden in the waist band of my boxer shorts
- Inside the neck of the desk fan where I do my homework
- Hidden underneath my retainer while in my mouth
- Inside a bag of candy
- Inside a "fake" lipstick container I bought online. Lip gloss or lipstick. It's rare that tubes of lip gloss or lipstick containers are checked for drugs, that's why these are such good hiding places. Ecstasy tablets or even LSD can be concealed safely inside lip gloss or lipstick containers. Small amounts of Cocaine or other illegal drugs can also be hidden inside lip gloss tubes.
- Inside a "fake" shaving cream can
- Inside my belt buckle. A lot of belt buckles are being sold on the Internet or other shops that have secret compartments to hide drugs. Some can even be transformed into a pipe to smoke marijuana with. Ordinary belt buckles, likewise, can hold a small amount of illegal drugs.
- Taped underneath my dresser
- Taped underneath the toilet bowl tank
When one thinks of drugs and kids they usually think about their teenage children and the dangers they could be facing. It is not just our teenage children who needs our worry. Children as young as nine years old are experimenting with drugs. Your first means of combat is knowledge. You need to become smart and knowledgeable about drugs.

SEXTING
Balancing the Law and Bad Choices
Part One (These are true stories from students I have assisted. Their names have been changed.) Kate was 16 years old and in love with her 17 year old boyfriend,Thomas. So, when he asked her to take a naked picture of herself with her cell phone and send it to him, she did.
She thought this would be something just the two of them could share and in doing so would show Thomas how much she loved him.
When Thomas broke up with Kate a month later, she started noticing kids in her school who were giggling behind her back.
She soon realized why this was happening when her best friend came to her and showed her her cell phone, which contained the picture she had sent to Thomas. Kate found out that the picture had been forwarded to almost everyone in school and now they all had the photo on their cell phones.
For months after, Kate was laughed at and teased and called names like slut and whore.
Kate was devastated. Her grades dropped and she no longer wanted to go to school or socialize with other kids like she used to. Not knowing what had happened, her parents were baffled.
Fifteen year old Ester was dating Vince, her seventeen year old boyfriend. Ester asked Vince to take a picture with her cell phone of her performing oral sex on him. Ester sent a copy of the picture only to Vince and he was discrete enough not to share that picture with anyone.
Vince kept the picture on his cell phone for his eyes only. Vince always had his cell phone at school and one day he was caught texting during class and his phone was taken from him. His teacher felt it was necessary to look through the phone and found the picture.
School authorities reported the picture to the police and the police contacted Vince's parents. Vince's parents wanted the police to investigate Ester for any charges that could be brought against her as this picture was taken at her request.
Such patterns are becoming too common. Sexting is now the term given to the act of juveniles sharing sexually explicit or nude cell phone photos of themselves or of others. This is spreading among the teen population and is becoming a widespread problem. Once recent study reports that one in five teens say they have posted on-line nude photos of themselves. Twenty-two percent of teen girls report doing this, of which half were aged 13 - 15. In the same report, 31% report have received a nude or semi-nude photo from someone else. Two thirds of these photos are from or to a boyfriend or girlfriend. Shockingly, 15% of teens say they have sent nude or semi-nude photo of themselves to someone they only knew online and had never met!
Nearly four in ten teens admit sending or posting sexually suggestive messages. Criminal charges have been filed against teens for sexting in Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin and other states.
Teens engaged in this conduct are completely unaware that what they are doing is illegal, and in many cases could potentially face registration requirements as a sexual offender for committing this act. In all of the states listed above, prosecutors have charged those teens sending the photos and those receiving the photos with child pornography offenses, with some teens being labeled sexual offenders.
