Welcome to 2012
On a recent cold morning walk my 12 year old daughter asked bit wistfully where she might end up attending high school. I responded excitedly "That's the coolest part about right now. You get to write your own story! Write the story you want to be in." Jean Luc Godard wrote that every story must have a beginning a middle and an end, but not necessarily in that order. I love beginnings. Starting a new story from whatever launch point I begin is the most thrilling part of the process for me. As we embark upon 2012, I intend to take as much time as possible soaking in this essence of 'beginning-ness" - this tipping point between a creative impulse and definitive action.
As it turns out, I'm writing a new story this year too. It's actually a series of short stories. The first in the series is a brand new educational chapter. This January I begin the official path towards my Masters degree in Clinical Nutrition. I know I'll be better equipped to arm each of you with legitimate scientific recommendations over the next year. Our series of stories also includes a Studio makeover as we begin a brand new lease term. Look for expanded retail, a new heating system and continued upgrades to the physical space. A whole other story this year is dedicated to our craft and the teaching community as we expand our intimate continuing education program with new content and an exciting extension program, I've affectionately labeled the "Control Group". And finally, we'll also be writing a new exercise story for the Pilates world as SpringTone grows! I have had the luxury of spending the last few months of 2011 preparing for the onset on 2012 in a business building process that helped me re-define the heart and soul of Real Pilates. That process has revealed a much bigger story to be told over the coming years. I don't yet know if I'm starting at the beginning or in the middle but I know that wherever we are headed, it will be informed by the wonderful people that roll through the doors of the studio each day and share their time, energy and talent with all of us. I look forward to hearing each of your stories this season and even more significantly, I hope we can be an integral part of whatever story you decide to write in the coming year.
Warmly, Alycea

  Who's this Lynda Lippin Anyway?
Article by Real Pilates Instructor Yael LubarrLynda Lippin, the newest addition to the Real Pilates staff, is not your average Pilates instructor. The term fitness guru drips from the page when reading her bio and resume. She is not only a Master teacher of Pilates with two decades of teaching under her belt, but is also a Reiki Master, has won various awards, is a published author, and not surprisingly, has dedicated clients around the world, (we don't scoop and tell). Although this is not the usual route taken by former college professors of Philosophy and Women's Studies, expertise in these two subjects can undoubtedly come in handy when interacting with high profile clients. Lynda became a certified Pilates instructor in the early 1990's while attending grad school and teaching college courses in Philadelphia. But it wasn't until 2005 when she admits she did the craziest thing she's ever done: sold everything, packed up her husband and 3 cats, left Philly, and moved to the very private resort area on Turks and Caicos known as Parrot Cay. After 6 years of living and working in paradise (literally), Lynda realized it was time to return to her hometown of NYC, this time with no cats, only her husband and Smiley, the Potcake dog. She left those perfect beaches of the Caribbean...just in time for the winter season of New York. And even though she loves the smell of the ocean, Lynda has mentioned she's glad to be back, one reason being because she hasn't seen snow in years. I really don't think that's going to be a problem.
