Excellence vs. Perfection
10 Differences to Change Your Focus

Greetings!

I'm always fascinated when I run into a perfectionist. They are oblivious to what seems obvious to everyone around them. Their pursuit of the unseen "perfection" makes successfully working with them virtually impossible.

On the other hand, I've had the memorable pleasure of working with people who pursue excellence. Working with them is a joy, because the process of achieving excellence is integral to the project itself, rather than just the focus on the final product.

This newsletter is focused on helping you find if you're a perfectionist or if you're pursuing excellence. Knowing the difference is critical to your success and mental well-being, both personally and professionally.

Feel free to share your thoughts and points of view with me, as well. I invite you to email me and share your stories and experiences.

P.S.  Are you writing a newsletter and need some "snippets" of information? You are welcome to quote anything in this e-zine, provided you give appropriate credit.

Excellence vs. Perfectionism
Understanding the Difference

What is the pursuit of perfectionism?

Perfectionism is when you believe that you, your tasks, your home, your LIFE must be 100% perfect in order to be acceptable. Perfectionism is black and white with no gray area. Anything other than perfect is failure.

What is the pursuit of excellence?
The pursuit of excellence when you are aiming to achieve at the highest level possible, to be the best you can be. Don't be mistaken; the pursuit of excellence requires as much effort and focus as pursing perfection; but, unlike perfectionism, it is focused on the impact of the performance, rather than the performance itself.

The Major Difference

It's important to note that perfectionism is as much (if not more of) an attitude than a behavior.

By way of example: two people are giving a presentation to a group. The person pursuing excellence is focused on making sure the message gets through, that they connect with the audience, and that the desired behavior is achieved. Further, if only SOME of the audience accepts the message, the person pursuing excellence will find value in that, even if it's not a "win".

The person pursuing perfectionism will be distracted by the fact that the handouts are on the wrong color paper, or that the chairs aren't placed exactly as they should be, or that they had to change the room in which they are to give their presentation. Further, unless they achieve 100% buy-in, the project is a total failure.

The difference lies in the thought process not only about the goal or behavior, but in the process leading to the goal or behavior itself.

Excellence vs. Perfectionism
10 Differences

  1. All-or-Nothing Thinking - Perfectionists, like Excellent People, tend to set high goals and work hard toward them. However, an Excellent Person can be satisfied with doing a great job and achieving excellence (or something close), even if their very high goals aren't completely met. Perfectionists will accept nothing less than, well, perfection. 'Almost perfect' is seen as failure.
  2. Critical Eye - Perfectionists are far more critical of themselves and of others than are Excellent People. While Excellent People take pride in their accomplishments and tend to be supportive of others, perfectionists tend to spot tiny mistakes and imperfections in their work and in themselves, as well as in others and their work. They hone in on these imperfections and have trouble seeing anything else, and they're more judgmental and hard on themselves and on others when 'failure' does occur.
  3. "Push" vs. "Pull" thinking - Excellent People tend to be pulled toward their goals by a desire to achieve them, and are happy with any steps made in the right direction. Perfectionists, on the other hand, tend to be pushed toward their goals by a fear of not reaching them, and see anything less than a perfectly met goal as a failure.
  4. Unrealistic Standards Unfortunately, a perfectionist's goals aren't always even reasonable. While Excellent People can set their goals high, perhaps enjoying the fun of going a little further once goals are reached, perfectionists often set their initial goals out of reach. Because of this, Excellent People tend to be not only happier, but more successful than perfectionists in the pursuit of their goals.
  5. Focus on Results -Excellent People can enjoy the process of chasing a goal as much or more than the actual reaching of the goal itself. Conversely, perfectionists see the goal and nothing else. They're so concerned about meeting the goal and avoiding the dreaded failure that they can't enjoy the process of growing and striving.

  6. (for the rest of the list, email me and ask for the handout on "Discovering Excellence")

Understanding your employee and co-worker's behavior is critical to success. Stop wondering and learn how and why people act the way they do and how to manage and work with them for success.
