STOP Sniping!
How to End Toxicity in the Workplace

Sarah Zink 2011

Greetings!

Anyone who knows me knows that you will never wonder what I'm thinking. I work hard to communicate effectively, consistently and powerfully.

Sadly, we live in a world where "PC" seems to have become synonymous with never speaking our mind. In my opinion, we lose something valuable and fail to respect those around us when we don't communicate our thoughts honestly.

That DOESN'T mean that we have license to say whatever comes to our mind, or speak meanly. It does mean that we disagree respectfully, or that we discuss in private those things that are concerning to us.

This newsletter will deal with those issues of honest communication vs. "sniping", and how to be an effective communicator of those difficult messages.

P.S.  Are you writing a newsletter and need some "snippets" of information? You are welcome to quote anything in this e-zine, provided you give appropriate credit.

What is Sniping?

"Sniping" has many definitions, I'm sure. For the sake of us all being on the same page, I'm talking about people who say negative or malicious things about another person behind their back or speak disparagingly of a project in a "gossipy" way, rather than a constructive way. According to studies of the workplace, this is one of the largest problems affecting morale and productivity.

The action of sniping and the person who is a sniper are toxic in the workplace, and in any group or organization. Their behavior must be addressed immediately; otherwise, their cancer of negativity and destruction of the team will spread exponentially.

Not only will you find this problem in the workplace you will also find it in committees, groups and organizations. This newsletter is going to focus on sniping in general, with tips and tools on how to address it in most any circumstance.

Communication is Fragile

It's important to know that sometimes, people are sniping because they have misundersood something that was said. Sometimes, they don't have a clear understanding of what is happening in the workplace or in the committee or group.

Sometimes, they are sniping because of something YOU have said or done, which gives them a justifiable reason to be unhappy.

NO MATTER WHAT, the burden is on the sniper to stop behaving badly and take personal accountability for their behavior.

It doesn't matter what others are doing - YOU have to do the right thing. If YOU are the sniper, stop it and take heed to the tips and tools below

Understanding your employee and co-worker's behavior is critical to success. Stop wondering and learn how and why people act the way they do and how to manage and work with them for success.

If the Sniper "Snipes" to You

Call it sniping, call it gossip - the results are the same. The sniper has to have someone to listen to them in order to be successful. If you have someone "sniping" to you about a person or project, here are a few tips and tools to use to re-direct the communication into something positive:

  • STOP LISTENING - and I don't mean let them keep talking but ignore what they are saying. I mean tell them you don't want to listen to the negative talk, and ask them what they can do to fix it;
  • BE A MENTOR - one of the most aggravating things I've experienced recently is hearing someone say that "everyone is unhappy with... " This was not said in the spirit of resolution, but in the spirit of dissention. If someone has come to you with disappointments, etc., be the one to guide them to resolve the issue - encourage the sniper to set up a meeting with the person they are struggling with, or by creating a strategy for success.
  • BE A ROLE MODEL - be sure you aren't the one who is speaking negatively about others - it only makes you look small and foolish.

If You're the One Being "Sniped" About
  • POSITIVE CONFRONTATION:
    • If you sense that the other person isn't going to come and speak to you directly, take the initiative and call them to set up a time to meet. If you're concerned about "interpretation" being skewed, then find someone who is neutral about the issue, and let the other person know that they will be present.
  • SELF-ANALYSIS
    • Is it you? Sometimes, you might have mis-communicated. Your ability to honestly evaluate the situation will directly impact your ability to be successful when handling difficult communications.
  • HANDLE IT
    • Don't hesitate to deal with a sniper. They won't quit by themselves, and they won't go away.

Raw vs. Refined
  • Correct Any Assumptions you are Making
    • Raw: You're trying to keep me out of the loop, and you're talking down to me.
    • Refined: Your actions are sending the message that you think I shouldn't be involved in this project and that you believe I'm less qualified on this subject than you are. Is that correct?
  • Don't Threaten, Clarify Consequences
    • Raw: You need to do a great job on this project, or we'll all be in trouble.
    • Refined: In order to be successful on this project, the expectation is that you will improve your customer relations feedback from fair to good within six months. Knowing that, what can I do to help you meet that goal?
