"Think Zink" Newsletter

Leadership Training...                             August 2010
Are you SICK of it yet?

Sarah Zink Dear :

Leadership Training - have you "Googled" it lately? There are literally thousands of trainings out there about
leadership, and I'm sure that each one has something valuable in it.

I have to confess that anything I'm going to tell you in this newsletter isn't going to be earth-shattering, or groundbreaking. In fact, you probably will hear things that you've heard before.

But sometimes, we need to hear things over and over and over again before we actually accept them.

In this newsletter, I'm going to share with you what *I* think true leadership is about. Let me know what you think.

Warm Regards,

Learn to Lead Yourself

Leading others is practically guaranteed to fail if you can't learn to lead yourself.

This means to model what you want to see in others:
  • Timeliness
  • Respect
  • Performance
Barring skills that you don't possess, it's a slap in the face to your team to expect from them behavior that you don't model.

Learn to Lead Yourself
Action, not Position
Behavior, not Skills
Whose Fault is it?
Leadership is about Action, not Position

The single most important thing you can learn in this newsletter is that just because you are in charge doesn't mean you are a leader.

Be sure you know what you want when you talk about wanting to be a leader. Do you simply want to tell others what to do? Do you want to inspire others to achieve together more than they could have done alone? Do you want your name on the door? Think about it. The answer, deep in your heart, will determine if you will ever learn how to be a leader.

Leadership is about Behavior, not Skills

Something I have always found shocking is that people think if they have a strong enough set of SKILLS, then they will be powerful leaders. The disappointment they experience when they find out this isn't so is heartbreaking.

Leadership is about behavior - how you act and how you treat others. You might have no skills whatsoever, but if you can inspire others to greatness, then you are a leader. Here are some valuable behaviors of a leader:
  • Integrity - your word must be gold
  • Self-Control - never lose your temper or your tongue
  • Leading by Example - don't just be willing to do it, DO IT
  • Fairness - even when it hurts
  • Listening - this means more than to stop talking
  • Shepherding the Team - if you can tell them what to do, you are responsible for their welfare

Whose Fault is it?

Sadly, in the workplace, it's easy to shift to a culture of blame, rather than to a culture of contribution.

Don't feed the fire. Be sure you are asking the right questions - stop asking "Who" and "Why" and start asking "What" and "How".

  • WRONG:  "Who" and "Why" - Who did this? Why did this happen? These questions set off a 'witch hunt'.
  • RIGHT: "What" and "How" - What happened here? How are we going to fix it? How are we going to ensure it doesn't happen again? These questions work to solve a problem.
The GOOD NEWS: When your team wins, celebrate! Make sure to spread around the congratulations for the victory.

THE BAD NEWS: When your team fails, you as a leader must take TOTAL responsibility. It was your fault, either in the planning, preparation, selection of team members, mentoring of team members, follow up, etc. When you learn and accept this lesson, you are practically guaranteed success.
