You Can Do it Right, or...                             June 2010
You Can Make Excuses, but You Can't Do Both!

Recently, I've run into a few circumstances that caused me to re-think a few ideas I have about what is the root of workplace performance issues.

The first experience was a young lady handling a project, and she received several comments from three or four people on how to improve the project for next year, and her response was, "Oh, I won't be here, so I'm not going to worry about it." HUH?

The second incident I had was a gentleman who was being paid a salary to produce certain results. When I asked why, after a considerable period of time, he had done NOTHING, his response was "I really didn't like my boss's way of working... " etc., etc. WHAT?

The final straw for me was a circumstance I found myself in while working on a project. The person I was working with has overall responsibility for the health and success of her organization yet she spends an inordinate amount of time on minutia, and time-wasting activities. When she was asked about critical projects, or time -sensitive issues, she bemoans the fact that she just "ran out of time".

In this newsletter, I'm going to share with you my conclusions about what is similar in all three of these circumstances. Let me know what you think.

Warm Regards,

...but You Can't do Both

You can't hold the core value of "Doing the Right Thing Right" and then make excuses.

Here's are three (3) "take-aways" from this month's newsletter:

  1. KNOW your core values. If you look deep inside and don't like what you see - change it.
  2. "Do the Right Thing Right" - avoid doing the wrong thing right, or the right thing wrong.
  3. Stop making excuses and take TOTAL personal responsibility for your work product.

What's Your Core?
You Can Do it Right...
...Or You Can Make Excuses
What's At Your Core?

I have to ask you this at the beginning, because the wrong answer provides the wrong foundation.

Your core needs to be centered around excellence, not perfection; doing the job right, not just doing the job; and creating win-wins, not competing for your own glory.

If your topmost concern isn't the overall success, health and well-being of your employees, your co-workers and your company, then no amount of leadership training, executive coaching, or classwork is going to change the root of your problem.

You Can Do It Right...

Do the Right Thing Right

Yes, I know - this sounds simple and obvious; however, how many times have you done the easier thing, rather than the right thing? How many times have you done the right thing, but didn't do it right (or well)?

TAKE A MOMENT - slow down, breathe, avoid knee-jerk reactions and "Do the Right Thing Right."

The sad fact of the matter is that all too often, we'll do the right thing wrong, or the wrong thing right to "save time". But I can assure you from painful personal and professional experience - you will spend the time at the beginning to do the right thing right - or at the end to "fix it".

OH - and when you think that "nobody will know", that kind of thinking reveals your core. If nobody ever saw or noticed the quality of work you do, and you use that as a reason to do poor-quality work - what does that say about your character?

...Or You Can Make Excuses

"I didn't have the right resources."

"I ran out of time."

"I didn't like my boss."

"Excuses are tools of incompetence that build monuments of nothingness and those who specialize in them seldom do anything else." (Thomas J. Smith)

  • Don't give or accept excuses. - Find reasons for error and correct them.
  • Don't build a culture of excuses. Build a culture of results and achievement.

"An excuse is worse than a lie,
for an excuse is a lie, guarded."

(Alexander Pope)
