What is networking? To me, it's a "no-brainer" to point out that networking is developing a NETWORK of people to whom you send referrals and from whom you receive referrrals.
I have always been fascinated with the different styles of networking that people adopt - most of them useless, time-wasting, and sometimes, downright offensive.

Know Who You Are - What goods or services are your company selling? Nobody does everything, so select what your company will be known for.
Know Where to Find Your Target Market - don't go to a meat market to sell flowers!
Know What You Want from Your Target Market - sometimes, what you want ISN'T a sale, it's a "back door" into your target market's office.

Are you a Poker Player?
It's always a suprise to me that people ACTUALLY believe that handing out their business cards like a poker player will bring in business.
The giving or exchanging of business cards is the LAST step in the networking process, and sometimes, it doesn't take place at all. You must learn when/how to give out your business cards.

STOP reading name tags! Whenever I speak on the topic of networking, I typically ask everyone to take off their name tags, or to hide their company name.
Immature or amateur networkers will run around a room reading name tags, trying to find what they perceive to be their "target market", when in truth, they don't know what they're doing.
"You Don't Know Who I Know" should be on everyone's name tags. Take the time to find out who a person is, who they work with and for, and who THEIR target market is. You will surprise yourself every time with the valuable information you gain from these questions.

Are you networking, or are you using networking events to "hang out" with your buddies? Stop being a leech and move out and meet people you don't know.
Too often, I see "sales professionals" using networking evnts as a personal party time. If you spend more than 15 minutes in an entire evening of networking with people you know, then you aren't making the most of your networking time. If you MUST visit with your friends, ask them who is there that they know that you don't.
