Health Action Alert #1 Stop the proposed nutrition information and healthcare monopoly in Michigan
The American Dietetics Association has been quietly passing legislation state-by-state to attempt to control and monopolize the nutrition field. The ADA is trying to get states to pass regulatory laws that would essentially strip highly qualified and educated practitioners from giving advice on nutrition. If they achieve their goals you could have a Masters degree or even higher training in health or nutrition and unless you are ALSO a Registered Dietitian (which is technically a protected trade name) you would not be allowed to dispense nutrition advice.
In 2006, a very restrictive law was passed in Michigan, PL333, but due to the activity of Michigan Nutrition Association, www.MichiganNutritionAssociation.org, luckily for your health's sake the law has been held up and is now getting the attention of Governor Snyder's administration.
The Office of Regulatory Reinvention has been set up in the Snyder administration to review all existing regulations in order to identify those that are unnecessary, burdensome, and counterproductive to promoting economic growth. They are soliciting comments from citizens like YOU. We know they are looking at PA333, the Dietetics/Nutrition Licensure Law, and public comment will play a significant role in it's future. Your voice really matters here, so please take 5 minutes and put your opinions in writing, online here: http://www.michigan.gov/lara/0,1607,7-154-10576_35738-254962--,00.html
To make your opinions more powerful try to include your own personal story about nutrition as a consumer or provider. You can use any (or many) of the themes below as a guide or just add your own. OR if you just feel any of these points (or any others) resonate with you as a Michigan citizen, Regulatory Reinvention is interested in what you have to say. The Rule or Rule Set asked for in the online form is PA333.
Here are the various themes:
1. This regulation will put many hundreds of people out of work and make MIchigan hostile to those considering nutrition-related businesses or careers. We can't afford fewer job opportunities in this state.
2. Michigan needs more, not fewer nutrition care providers of varying backgrounds to implement stronger preventive health programs and reduce the costly burden of chronic disease to our state. This law reduces those resources.
3. Dietitians are employed primarily in hospitals, nursing homes and government programs and this law disproportionately affects those non-dietitian nutritionists who are entrepreneurs serving the community at large.
4. Citizens who are better educated about nutrition support other related businesses such as: small farms, farmer's markets, artisan food makers, health food stores, health food businesses, manufacturers of supplements, herbs and nutraceuticals, etc. We need a business climate that promotes diverse entrepreneurship and strengthens our agricultural base.
5. Americans currently have free access to an unlimited amount of nutrition and supplement information in any number of forms. Consumers are protected by consumer protection and malpractice laws and should have the right to make their own decisions about the kind of practitioner they choose to see without government interference. People are harmed by bad nutrition and an unsafe food supply, not by learning how to eat well.
6. A huge part of our nation's debt crisis is the cost of health care in Medicaid and Medicare. The politicians are talking about whether to cut these programs, but they are NOT talking about how to cut health care costs through preventative means like better nutrition and access to healthy food. PA333 will just bring us more of the same.
7. The ADA sees nothing wrong with taking money from junk food manufacturers such as Coke, Pepsi, McDonald's or Hershey's The American Dietetics Association is even allowing Coca Cola to provide continuing education to dietitians. We cannot allow the ADA to be "the nutrition experts" in America, as they believe they should be.
