"Healthcare the Way Mother Nature Intended!"

How a former dance teacher, Pilates instructor and busy Mom went from immobilizing back pain to a full-time, pain-free Nutrition Response Practitioner (and busier Mom)  helping others restore their own health without drugs or surgery.

Yes, that headline is about me, Kerry Cradit. I've been a Patient Advocate and Practitioner Assistant at the Nutritional Healing Center of Ann Arbor for almost 5 years.  If you are a current patient you've most likely seen me on my feet all day, moving pretty fast assisting  Dr. Shannon and Dr. Schmidt to help you get well. Now, I am joining the Doctors as a Nutrition Response Practitioner and am seeing patients on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

I have my degree in Nutrition and Food Science from Madonna University. I'm still a Certified Pilates Instructor. I'm a wife and mom of two teenage girls (my hardest job) and now I am also a Nutrition Response Testing Practitioner helping people get truly healthy.

What you probably don't know is what brought me here in the first place:

Four and a half years ago I was a Dance and Pilates instructor who couldn't move.

In May of 2006 I was the picture of good health.  I ate pretty well, I was teaching dance and pilates, ran a half Marathon in January and had just finished a 15.5 mile run in Grand Rapids. I would say I was pretty healthy.

Then one day in June I ended up flat on my back on my living room floor, unable to move.  It was SCARY and horrible!

The day it started, I called my husband home from work and told him I needed help. He thought we should go to the ER; but, I insisted we go to my chiropractor. So, we shuffled me to the car to see her. She helped...a bit. But, the pain continued. I couldn't even stand up, so taking care of my husband and kids was impossible. I felt pretty helpless. Over the next several months I saw other chiropractors, massage therapists, craniosacral therapists... they all helped me... a bit.

But we still, never got to the cause of my trouble.
I knew something needed to change. That's when I came to the Nutritional Healing Center of Ann Arbor. Dr. Schmidt did the Nutrition Response Testing and I got my Report of Findings.  He told me there were some serious areas of deficiency and organ dysfunction that were CAUSING the problem. He said I needed to take certain whole-food supplements along with some dietary changes. As soon as I added the supplements I really started feeling better

It was around this same time that some well meaning friends and family urged me to go see a Medical Doctor. My M.D. diagnosed me with arthritis based on an x-ray.

I told her, "This doesn't feel like arthritis. This is different."  She recommended taking over the counter pain relievers and anti inflammatory drugs and see what happens. Sort of like "Take two aspirin and call me in the morning", right? When I went for my re-check with her nothing had changed. She recommended stronger anti-inflammatory drugs, which I declined. My massage therapist who had been working diligently with me, recommended I push for an MRI, so I did. My M.D. wasn't going to do this on her own. I had to ask for it.

Here is where the story gets interesting...on my 3rd visit with Dr. Schmidt with Nutrition Response Testing he found a virus was affecting my spine. The MRI,done the very next day, showed an infection... in my spine! Now, the M.D. got serious...she wanted to start a course of I.V. antibiotics right now! She was even going to send a visiting nurse to my house.. Whoa!

...I was really scared now and this call came while I was making holiday dinner. Not fun. I felt like
I had a huge choice to make. I could go with food supplements to heal my back or I.V.s of antibiotics and pain relievers.  Drugs or food?!?  I was afraid I would just get more and more immobile.

On my next visit, Dr. Schmidt,  in his matter of fact way told me
I had nothing to lose if I tried his way, so I tried it his way...which is now my way.  I can tell you that was the best decision of my life. But, I didn't arrive there easily or overnight. I was searching and looking for answers this whole time.

At one point I went to see an orthopedic surgeon. Worst visit ever!!! It ended with him telling  me to come back when I was ready for surgery or drugs. (Well, he is a surgeon, right? So, of course surgery is the answer.)  My husband, who had come with me to hear what he had to say, looked at me and said "We're never coming back here are we?" To which I replied...."No way!" (maybe not that nicely.)

My back is now 98% better. I say 98 because I can still flare it up a bit with bad foods.  I'm still doing Pilates and running (though no Half Marathons lately, I'm too busy at NHCAA with my New nutrition Practice and being a mom to those two very active teenage girls!)

It actually took about 5 visits here and I knew The Nutritional Healing Center was where I wanted to work. When I got my Nutrition Degree I always pictured myself in a place helping people with what to eat, how to feel better and gain optimum health. I worked at U of M Hospital for over 1 year after I graduated from Madonna and never felt like I accomplished that. Now I'm doing that everyday.  I'm looking forward to how much more help I can give as a Nutrition Response Testing Practitioner.  See you here at NHCAA soon.

Yours In Health,

Results Are Typical

What was it like before you came in to see us?

Before discovering NHCAA I was not looking forward to the rest of my life.  I was in constant pain all day, every day from a bladder disease.  I was in and out of physicians' offices and was continually coming to a dead end for treatments and relief.  I was sad all of the time and I thought I would be miserable forever.  The pain was affecting my work, my relationships and my outlook on life.

How is it now?

After continual visits to NHCAA I feel like I did before I was diagnosed with a bladder condition.  I have had bad days every now and then but it is nothing compared to the pain I felt prior to visiting the NHCAA.  Some days, I forget that I have a chronic condition - that's how great I feel!
