Healthy Snack Ideas

Greetings!

We are frequently asked for some healthy snack ideas by many patients who are trying to avoid sugar and grains. Here are some ideas of things you can use to snack on with a healthy diet.

* Nuts, nutbutters, and seeds (it is a good idea to be tested for these foods so bring some in to your next visit and we'll check you to see if they are O.K. for you.)

* Any veggies dipped in hummus, cream cheese, salad dressing (look for a healthy one like Annie's Naturals)

* Protein powder drinks (whey, rice, hemp, pea protein powders)

* Vegetable juices

* Raw milk cheeses

* Olives

*Hard boiled eggs

* Plain or vanilla organic yogurt, coconut yogurt or kefir

* Snack bars (Standard Process or Lara Bars)

Enjoy!!

Spreading the Health

"Prior to seeing Dr. Schmidt I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Hypothyroid Disorder. I had gained 40 pounds and with strict diet and exercise I was only able to lose 5 pounds. This was very frustrating, as I have never experienced weight difficulty like this before. I was also having negative side effects from the time I started Synthroid, including hot flashes and fatigue. Now, I feel fabulous! I've lost 16 pounds, no more hot flashes, no more fatigue. I feel like myself again! Thank you Dr. Schmidt!!"

"I had migraine headaches every day. I tried every type of migraine medicine with little or no luck. Eventually, my neurologist put me on a daily medication used to control seizures. This helped, but there were many side effects. After seeing Dr. Shannon for six weeks, I am off all of my medication and have been headache free. I'm sleeping better, have more energy, and feel like myself again!"

A Healthy Recipe
Baked Cheese Crisps
(a healthy recipe from Debbie our Office Manager)

- Grease sheet of parchment paper front and back with butter. Place on baking sheet pan.
- Grate or slice cheese very thin (less than 1/8 inch thick). Hard cheeses (parmesan, romano, asiago, etc. will be crunchy; softer cheeses like cheddar will be chewy; mozzarella is not recommended)
- Place 1 - 4 Tablespoons on cheese on parchment paper. Leave 2 inches in between mounds.
- If desired add spices before baking (onion, garlic, hot pepper powder)
- Bake 5 - 6 minutes at 350 degrees until light golden brown (they will be a little darker at the edges).
- When still warm you can mold the crisps into a variety of shapes. Drape over an upturned glass or any cylindrical object.
Debbie uses these as snacks dipped in peanut butter or unsweetened jams. Or, you could use the cheese crisp as a pizza crust and put toppings on it for a quick snack.
