Greetings!
Labels on many foods can be confusing. Here are a few things to
know when you are looking for healthy options to feed yourself and your
family.
Organic foods are a healthy choice because they contain
more nutrients and less toxins (chemicals, arsenic, and pesticides). Here are some definitions for Organic Food Labeling.
100% Organic - Foods with this label
are made with 100% organic ingredients and may display the USDA Organic
seal.
Organic - These
products contain at least 95-99% organic ingredients (by weight). The
remaining ingredients are not available organically but have been
approved by the National Organic Program. These products may display the
USDA Organic seal.
Made With
Organic Ingredients - Food packaging that reads "Made With
Organic Ingredients" must contain 70-94% organic ingredients. These
products will not bear the USDA Organic seal.
The produce that you
should always try to buy Organic are: Celery, Peaches, Strawberries,
Apples, Blueberries, Nectarines, Bell Peppers, Spinach, Kale, Lettuce
and Leafy Greens, Cherries, Potatoes, Grapes, Carrots, and Pears. The commercial varieties are laden with chemicals.
Foods that are less likely to be contaminated by pesticides that are not
necessary to purchase Organic are: Onions, Avocado, Pineapple, Mango,
Asparagus, Sweet Peas, Kiwi, Cabbage, Eggplant, Watermelon, and
Broccoli.
PLU Codes, the numbers next to the barcode, give away the quality of the produce. The PLU code for Organic Produce is 5 numbers long prefaced by the number 9. Organic food is usually advertised and labeled as such. The PLU code for conventional produce is 4 numbers long. The PLU code for genetically modified produce is 5 numbers long prefaced with the number 8. Avoid the genetically modified "Franken-foods". They are usually not labeled (because no one would buy them) so to avoid them, you have to look at the codes!
Come to our Food Lecture on Wednesday, August 11 at 7:00 p.m. to hear
more healthy food ideas and get more information on purchasing healthy
foods.

Good News from Our Patients
"Before I came to NHCAA I was out of options and out of hope from traditional medicine. I'd had severe flu like symptoms since 2 weeks after the birth of my daughter - almost 3 years earlier. I'd been to 4 medical doctors who did everything from tell me it was all in my head to trying every test and medicine they could think of - none of it worked. My symptoms had gotten so bad that I was unable to care for my family and home like I wanted to. I was venting to some online friends and one of them referred me to NHCAA. I was skeptical at first, but since I had no other options I made an appointment with Dr. Shannon. Now, my flu like symptoms are nearly gone and I am on my way to living life like I've dreamed of for 3 years! Thank you Dr. Shannon!" ~J.S. 6/15/10 Results are typical.
"I was in general good health with some hair loss and occasional acid indigestion before coming to NHCAA. Now, I feel very good. I didn't realize there was so much room for improvement. I have more energy, I sleep better than I ever had before and I feel great! And, most importantly, I feel that I can control how I feel through eating right and taking supplements that work with my body."
~C.B. 8/6/09 Dr. Schmidt's patient. Results are typical.
