Fish oils contain two main ingredients: DHA and EPA. Since this article is written in plain English for you, I am not even going to give you the long chemical name.

DHA and EPA are the workhorses for repairing nerves. A healthy body can convert DHA to EPA and back as needed. Sick bodies don't. DHA and EPA do not work in the presence of chemicals and alcohol. Fish oil is better than flax oil. Flax oil takes four steps to convert to DHA and EPA. Therefore, conversion is low. Sometimes only 5%! Only use flax if you are really healthy and have a perfect diet if at all. Using the direct EPA and DHA in fish oil is smarter. The saturation point for loading a body up with oils is 3-6 weeks verified by PET scans at the National Institute of Health. At that point, if you are on neurological drugs, you can start to talk to your doctor about weaning off them.

DHA is calming for hyper kids, anxiety, nervousness and it's a mood stabilizer. It also helps increase focus for ADD children in school. One fish oil supplement oil we carry is a 5 DHA : 1 EPA ratio. If you are really anxious, take 6 per day.

EPA wakes people up, makes them want to be active or work out. Omega Brite is another fish oil supplement we carry. It is a 7 EPA : 1 DHA ratio. It was designed by the Head of Harvard Psychiatry, Dr. Stoll. It fixes depression. Do not use in manic disorders. Some people cycle fatigue in the morning (give EPA in the a.m.) and anxiety in the afternoon (give them DHA in the afternoon).

For Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, Brain Injury: give ProOMEGA from Nordic Naturals as much as 10 grams per day. It is 3.5 EPA : 2.5 DHA and highly concentrated. Extremely beneficial at the onset of these neurological diagnoses. Cod Liver Oil is an inexpensive, run-of-the-mill oil. It has vitamin D, and is good for brittle bones and schizophrenia. It is 2 DHA : 1 EPA. The close ration of EPA to DHA has no effect on mood.

Dr. Weston A. Price is a doctor that travelled the world in the 1930's. For ten years he studied the traditional diets of 134 indigenous civilizations that were untouched by modern marketing and food processing. There were some interesting similarities.

No civilization ate more than 20% of it's calories from protein. No civilization was vegan. All civilizations consumed copious amounts of fat. All civilizations had some form of raw animal food. In Europe, the raw food was dairy, in Japan it was fish, in Africa it was blood, in the Middle Ease it was lamb and the Eskimo had blubber.
