Bone Density and Osteoporosis What's your risk?
The commercials for Fosamax and other 'bone-building' drugs all say the same thing....if you're over 40, female, and living in America you probably have the beginnings of osteoporosis (also known as osteopenia). While Merck's studies show an increase in bone minerals after using the drug, significant side effects exist.
Bone loss happens with decreased weight-bearing activity (like with the astronauts that go up in space), but it is also a symptom of a poor diet. When you eat sugar and refined grains, your body processes these 'foods' by pulling minerals from your bones. A low protein and low-fat diet will also cause decreased bone density. Antacids (which block calcium absorption) and steroids (like Prednisone) can also cause bone loss--I know, I know, 'Tums has calcium'! However, none of their chalky calcium is EVER absorbed because the body only takes in Calcium in an ACIDIC environment. Tricky, huh?
We can help you determine dietary factors that may be causing your bone density to decrease, or we can make sure it never happens in the first place! Calcium supplements can be a part of this, but minerals, essential fats, Vitamin D, and others can also be important. Everyone is different, so Dr. Schmidt or myself can test YOU to see what YOU need. |
Why Scars Are Dangerous Any cuts or damage to the surface of your body, whether from injuries or surgeries, can cause hidden disturbances and 'confusion' in your body! They are an often overlooked source of stress on your organs, but one that we find and treat every day in our office. No matter how old or how new your scar, it could be compromising your health and keeping you from healing. |

How to Be Healthy This 'Allergy Season'
Happy Spring! Do you suffer from allergies when the weather warms up? We have great success helping our patients clean out their livers and gallbladders, which then helps decrease or eliminate their allergy symptoms! There are lots of products we use for this, we just need to determine which ones will help you. Dr. Schmidt is giving a lecture at Whole Foods on April 25th on Allergies and Asthma. Don't miss it! Check our website for details. |
| Gardasil Vaccine Update
Concerned Citizens and Moms Speak Up! As you may have heard, Merck has stopped it's push for mandatory vaccination for HPV in several states due to pressure from concerned parents and doctors. The company claims that it was merely concerned with young girls' health, while many lawmakers and citizens believed they were simply motivated by the promise of easy money (the 3 shot series costs around $360). We are excited that the plans to 'require' this vaccine have been put on hold--the best way to ensure that you don't get HPV, cervical cancer, or any other disease is to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, take supplements, and avoid unnecessary medications (vaccines fall under this heading!). And remember, NO vaccination is ever mandatory---you always have the option to decline! |
