1) Sugar or Fat- Which is the Culprit?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Many diet books look at current research and clinical studies to come up with conclusions. There is a newer science called nutritional epidemiology. It is based on statistics we have taken on our health and eating habits since the end of WW2 which is a much longer time than "current research". Nutritional epidemiology answers the question of which is better in general: low-carb diets or low-fat diets. Most of the following information came from a book called Modern Food Trends by the USDA.
From 1965 to 1996: Consumption of fat decreased from 43% to 33% of total calories. Consumption of protein has remained relatively the same for many decades. From 1965 to 2002, the percentage of overweight Americans went from 45% to 64%. From 1972 to 1996, the incidence of coronary heart disease rose from 16.2 per 1,000 persons to 78.2 per 1,000 persons. So what about carbs? From 1977 to 1994 the consumption of grain mixtures increased 115%, Ready to eat cereals increased 60%, Snack foods increased 200%, Sugar intake increased 80%, Soft drinks increased 200%. From 1821 to 2001, consumption of sugar increased 2,000%!! From 10 lbs. to 210 lbs. per person per year. Here is the bottom line- As a general rule, eating fat does not cause weight gain. Why are we gaining weight? It's the excess carbohydrate consumption!
2) Why are those vitamins so cheap?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cheap vitamins contain less than ideal amounts of the necessary ingredients to improve your health. For example, you may have heard of Glucosamine sulfate. It is well researched and proven to build joint cartilage, connective tissue and joint fluid. The therapeutic dose is 1500mg per day. There is no need to go over that amount and anything under is ineffective for reducing joint pain. The active ingredient is the "Glucosamine" part. You want 1500 mg of Glucosamine. The "sulfate" part is just a carrier. It can be replaced with another chemical like "HCl". Cheap vitamins will have 1000mg of sulfate and only 500 mg of Glucosamine. Be wary of cheap vitamins. Supplements sold through professionals are better quality.

May 19 Arthritis. The only medical treatment for joint pain is painkillers. As everyone knows, this only masks the symptoms. There are nutritional therapies that can treat the cause and reverse the problem for good, regardless of the type of arthritis it is. June 2 Headaches. There are many different causes of headaches. Here are some that will be explored: migraines, tension, allergy, sinus and hunger headaches. Rather than treating just the pain, find out what the cause of your headache is and get to the root of the problem

4) Wanna see "Super-size" with me?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's only playing for 6 days at the Michigan Theatre on Liberty Street in Ann Arbor. It's $8 per person or $6.25 if you are over 55 or under 12. I am going at 4 pm this Saturday the 22nd of May and I'd like you to join me. I won't pay for your ticket in, nor will I pay for the super-big tub of popcorn that smells so good but we can enjoy each other's company and the others' who tag along. Let me know if you want to come. If there are enough people, I'll buy tickets in bulk beforehand to save money.
Why are Americans so fat? Find out in Super Size Me, a tongue-in-cheek-and burger in hand-look at the legal, financial and physical costs of America's hunger for fast food. Director Morgan Spurlock (in his debut film) tackles the American obesity epidemic by subjecting himself to a "McDonald's only" diet for thirty days straight. Featuring interviews with health experts nationwide, Spurlock's Sundance award- winning feature is both entertaining and horrifying, as it dives into a quagmire of corporate responsibility, nutritional education, school lunch programs and how we as a nation are eating ourselves to death. Running time: 98 minutes
