Proposition 25

California State PTA supports Proposition 25 to reform the state budget process.

Proposition 25 would:

  • Allow a majority of legislators to approve the budget, rather than the two-thirds vote currently required.  Does not lower the two-thirds vote required to raise taxes.
  • Hold legislators accountable by ensuring that they would forfeit their pay and benefits for each day the budget is overdue-no budget, no pay.

Proposition 24

California State PTA supports Proposition 24 to repeal three corporate tax reductions struck in the 2008 and 2009 budget agreements.

  • When fully implemented, these reductions would cost the state an estimated $1.3 billion a year.
  • Most of the benefit of these tax cuts would go to a small number of very large corporations.
  • PTA believes that this is not the time to give tax breaks to corporations, when our schools have faced over $17 billion in cuts in the previous two years and we have seen devastating cuts to critical health and social services.

Who Will Be California's Next Superintendent of Public Instruction?

What are their plans for K-12?  Who has the best ideas on education reform, teacher evaluation, early education and school readiness, children's health, and more?

Read what the two candidates had to say in response to a PTA questionnaire and see the recent debate between the candidates, co-sponsored by the California State PTA.

  • Larry Aceves: Retired School District Superintendent and Past President of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA)\
  • Tom Torlakson: California Assembly Member, Chair of the Assembly's Select Committee on Schools and Community, Member of the Education and Appropriations Committees, and former State Senator.

The state superintendent serves as the official spokesperson and advocate for California public schools and is responsible for the day-to-day operations on the California Department of Education (CDE), including determining the department's priorities.
