Why Attend the State PTA Convention in San Jose?
convention

April 30-May 3, 2009
San Jose McEnery Convention Center

The California State PTA strongly encourages its units, councils, and district PTAs to budget for and send as many members as possible to each annual convention. Here's why you should go:
  1. Leadership Training: Choose from 85 workshops on critical topics to ensure your PTA's success.
  2. View a complete list and descriptions in the Convention Registration Booklet.

  3. Exercise your right to vote: Each unit is entitled to vote on legislation policies, approve bylaws, elect new officers, and adopt resolutions.
  4. The number of voting delegates is determined by the number of memberships in your unit. See page 16 of the Convention Registration Booklet.

  5. Compare notes: Meet other delegates and exchange ideas.

  6. Exhibit Hall: See displays from over 175 companies and nonprofit organizations wanting to provide services and products for your PTA and school needs.
Typically as a minimum, the President and/or President-elect and Treasurer should attend the Convention but all officers are encouraged to come. To find more information go to www.capta.org and click on "Convention Registration". Register between February 2nd to March 31st for the lowest rates. Attend just one day, two, three or all four days. For questions contact Patty Gonser, VP of Membership & Leadership at bpgonser@comcast.net.

Can You Volunteer at Convention?
The 32nd District PTA is one of four host districts for the convention and must provide 200 volunteers. Volunteers can help with the exhibits, on the floor during general membership meetings, in the PTA Store, by making signs, monitoring workshops and by assisting with special events. If you are available to volunteer, please contact Janet Abelson at Abeljanet@aol.com and provide your name, phone, and dates you are available during the convention.

Honorary Service Award Program
Program Description
Honorary Service Awards are awarded to individuals or organizations as special recognition for outstanding service to children and youth. Funds contributed to the HSA Program provide resources for the California State PTA scholarship and grant program in the honoree's name. Your unit may choose to create an award specific to your school beyond those given in the state program. Our council has created the Las Trampas Creek Council Appreciation Award.

Council HSA Program
When the service of an individual or group goes beyond your school community, nominations should be made to Council for recognition. Suitable council level awards include work on parcel tax or bond campaigns or work on community service projects improving the lives of children throughout the council area. Nominations for council level HSAs are due by March 13 (2009 LTCC HSA Nomination form and Past Recipient list). Your unit may also choose to recognize this same person.

Unit HSA Programs
For detailed information, please see "Honorary Service Awards" on the California State PTA website www.capta.org. A useful tool for selecting honorees is a HSA award rubric, view sample here. It is highly recommended that units personalize this rubric for use in their HSA program.

Take a careful look at the individuals and specific circumstances within and outside of your school community. The applicants being considered should be recognized for outstanding service to children and youth and not for routine, assigned responsibilities or for retirement. Awards should be made at the time of the service and need not be solitary events. An individual or group can receive the same award more than once from your unit. Because an individual was awarded an HSA last year, does not mean you need to award them a CSA this year for additional service to your school. Receiving multiple HSAs from a unit would be a high honor indeed!
