WELCOME BACK TO JAGUAR ATHLETICS
The 2012-13 Fall athletic season is officially underway for our Upper School athletes! All TAPPS schools were allowed to hit the fields/courts on the first Monday of August which means every Fall sports team in our district is presently hard at work preparing for competition. This past week was an especially challenging week for our Fall US athletes, as many of them participated in Maccabi while also having to report to school for 6:00 am practices. We were impressed by so many of our athletes, especially those who chose to fulfill their commitment to both groups. That showed real commitment and perseverance and we recognize the extra effort that was required to meet the challenges that were presented to them. By tomorrow, our middle school athletes will join us and we will have more than 100 student-athletes on campus participating in cheerleading, cross-country, football and volleyball. This is an exciting time for athletics --- we are very anxious to get back onto the fields and courts!
Many of you may know Head US Football Coach, Adrian Adams. Coach Adams is also an Assistant US Baseball Coach and Physical Education teacher. He is a phenomenal coach and a great asset to our program and has accepted the position of Assistant Athletic Director for the coming school year. We are so pleased to have Coach Adams serving in this capacity. He believes strongly in our goal of providing an excellent quality, top notch Athletic Program and will assist in leading Emery Athletics to meet our goals. Also, we are so thankful to have many veteran coaches returning this year and at the same time we welcome our new coaches to the Emery Athletics family.
There's no question that we have the most incredible parent community around. Please allow me to say "thank you" in advance for the all of the hard work that you do and love and support you provide to your children.
Please feel free to contact me at agubitz@emeryweiner.org or 832-204-5900 (ext. 313) should you have any questions, feedback or need anything at all.
Go Jags!

NEW COACHES BRING EXPERIENCE TO ENHANCE
CROSS-COUNTRY, VOLLEYBALL, AND CHEER
David Berthold
Head MS/US Cross-Country Coach
Coach Berthold comes to us from Fort Worth Country Day School where he was assistant track coach and a ropes challenge course facilitator. In both of these capacities he emphasized teamwork, positive communication and challenged athletes and participants to reach their full potential in every event and competition. Coach Berthold has been running since middle school participating not only in both cross country and track, but also numerous road races all over the US. Coach Berthold's goal at EWS is to build and develop a cross country team from the middle school through the high school level in which student athletes strive for constant improvement, push themselves to reach their maximum potential and ultimately are competitive in our district.
Sheldon Wilkinson
Assistant MS/US Cross-Country and Assistant Track/Field Coach
Coach Wilkinson is no stranger to EWS as he worked with the Jaguar track and field team last year as a volunteer coach. This year we have been blessed to have him join our coaching staff on a more full-time basis. Coach Wilkinson was one of the most decorated runners in collegiate track the past 4 years. Ranked #1 in his conference, as well as being nationally ranked he was the one to beat at the SWAC Championship meets. As a recent graduate of Texas Southern University, Coach Wilkinson completed his final year on the TSU track & field team as a double medal winner, including being crowned SWAC 400m hurdle champion. He continues to train with aspirations of running in the Olympics one day, though in the meantime he is looking forward to working with the Emery/Weiner cross-country and track & field teams to help them achieve success.
Cami Montgomery
Head Junior Varsity & Assistant Varsity Coach
Coach Montgomery most recently was the Head Volleyball Coach for a 13U travel/club team in Charlotte, NC. She was a 6'2 middle blocker and has a passion for the sport. This past season her team placed 3rd in the Carolina Region. She has an extensive background in volleyball and is passionate about teaching young girl's the proper way to play. She started playing Volleyball in middle school and at the age of 13 went on to play Varsity at Osborne High School in Marietta, GA. There she won several awards including All-County. She also played club volleyball with the well-respected and premier volleyball club North Atlanta Volleyball Club (NAVC). Coach Montgomery received a full athletic scholarship to Alabama State University, which is a Division I college at the age of 16. A 4-year starter, she was chosen for several All-Tournament Teams, as well as being my ASU's first & only (2005) Defensive Player of the Week in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Her senior year, she was named to the SWAC All-Tournament Team and named ASU's MVP. She is very excited to coach at Emery/Weiner and looks forward to working with the team.
Emmie Rothenbach
Assistant Varsity Cheer Coach
Emmie is expanding her role at The Emery/Weiner School this year, moving both into the classroom as a yoga teacher and onto the sidelines as the Assistant Cheer Coach. She is passionate about fitness and performance, and so excited to channel these passions into her work with the cheer team. With an emphasis in Theatre Performance at Baylor University, she has a dance background and loves to be in front of a crowd. She is looking forward to working with the team on conditioning, stunts, and routines as they both cheer on the EWS teams and compete in their own sport. GO JAGS! |

US FALL TEAM PREVIEW: VARSITY CHEER
One of the rising athletic programs on Emery's Upper School campus is the Varsity Cheer Team. Under the direction of 2nd year Head Coach Jennifer Bauer-Conley and joined by newly named Assistant Coach Emmie Rothenbach the squad looks to take the team to the next level.
After naming the 18 members of the team in April, they went right to work in the summer to come together as a cohesive unit. The group attended a four day Cheer Camp held on the campus of SMU in June where they saw much success. Team Co-Captain and Junior at EWS, Lauren Liss made the NCA All-American cheer team. Only 10% of cheerleaders nominated are chosen for this honor. By being selected to the All-American team, Lauren will be performing at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a college bowl game, and has an opportunity to cheer on the All American Squad in London . Congratulations to Lauren for being the first Emery Cheerleader to ever receive this recognition. Also, Sebastian Biondi, Emery's new Jeremiah (mascot), received a trophy for being the most improved mascot out of almost 30 mascots that were at the camp. The entire team received a team award for being the most spirited throughout cheer camp. They earned a spirit stick to bring back to Emery, which found its rightful place in the trophy case.
When asked what she is looking most forward to as the cheer team enters 2012-13, Coach Baur-Conley said, "Besides getting to know the newest members of the team, I am really looking forward to this new chapter in Emery cheerleading which will include entering our first ever cheer competition. It will require a lot of hard work and dedication, but after seeing how they performed at camp --- I know we are ready to take our team to a whole new level and I am confident they will step up to the challenge." The team will begin preparation for the year on Monday, August 13. Look for them to bring spirit to the school and support of other athletic teams throughout the year!
Please visit the Cheer Page on the Emery Athletic Page for the entire roster and more updates on their performances throughout the year. |
