We've sure heard a lot about "social networks" lately! Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and more. But what is a social network, and why would we want to get involved with one?
We all are part of lots of networks in our daily life. There's the folks at church, colleagues at work, the parents of the kids on our kid's hockey team, the group of alumni from our college, various clubs we belong to, etc. These are all social networks that we already participate in.

An online social network is just like these "real-world" examples. An online social network is a collection of people that share contacts and resources. Online social networks let you see and build your network, and enable you to make effective use of it.
OK, so how big is your "real life" social network? Friends, family, colleagues, associates? Maybe 50 people? 100 people? 400 people? These people support your projects and goals, work with you to achieve results, and sometimes refer you to THEIR friends as resources or potential customers.
LinkedIn is a little larger than your other networks. In fact, there are over 35,000,000 people on LinkedIn, and this number grows by over 1.3 million per month!

I think my "real world" network must be around 200 people. Currently there are 25 people in LinkedIn that are connected to me. Those 25 people are connected to over 19,500 people. . . and THEY are connected to over 2,052,100 people! So I'm only two steps away from over 2 million people that fit the above demographics! Are you excited yet? I certainly am!
