Sitting in the cafeteria at Vernon Middle School, a group of about 100 students sat at the lunch tables with notebooks and worksheets, awaiting the beginning of a free program that provides homework help, robotics, cooking class and martial arts training.

 

"I'm excited that the (Afterschool Centers on Education) pogram is starting again," said Isaiah Arellano, an eigth grade student at Vernon Middle School. "I like to be able to do my homework with my friends and have a bumch of new experiences."

Women's cross-country gets ready for competition

 

By the time most students are getting up for the school day, the women's cross-country teams at Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South are already running their third mile.

The competition season for both women's cross country teams is in full swing and in preparation the teams have been practicing since late July.

Saxophonist Keith DiSantis has performed in restaurants, concert halls, airplanes, and he will add the Al Sears Jazz Festival to that list later this month.

Di Santis, the band director at Vernon Middle School, will be a featured saxophonist at the festival in Macomb, Ill.

 Person of the week: Kortan sets the framework for HCISD

 

 

Veronica Kortan, with her pink notebook in hand, conquers motherhood and professional organization without breaking a sweat.

"I have about eight or nine completely filled pink notebooks out home," Kortan said. "I use them to write my schedule, to-do lists, ideas, work and general notes. I have this almost everywhere I go."

Grandparents and students came together at Dishman Elementary School to celebrate all generations at the Grandparents Social.

Breakfast was provided to everyone that attended, and grandparents had the opportunity to spend a weekday morning with their grandchildren.

This is the second year that Dishman has held the Grandparents Social, and it was implemented in an effort for the students at Dishman to celebrate their elders.
