Exciting news! The candidates in the U.S. Senate race in Virginia have confirmed that they will appear in a VBA Summer Meeting debate. Media outlets are calling this race one to watch.
Don't miss this truly historic event July 21 at The Homestead in Hot Springs - or any of the other VBA and legal news included in The VBA Voice. |
Early registration for Summer Meeting ends Tuesday |
While the debate between George Allen and Tim Kaine will be a highlight of the 122nd Summer Meeting, July 19-22, the conference is much, much more than that:
- More than 25 MCLE Credits' worth of
educational programs.
Big names, including programs that:
- Feature state senators and delegates,
- Include the chief judge and two other judges from the Court of Appeals of Virginia,
- Focus on Virginia exonerations and feature Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, and
- Headline former Gov. Gerald Baliles, the attorney general and the CEO of Carilion Health Care System.
Big fun
- An opening reception Thursday, as well as a reception, awards, recognition of Life Members, dinner and dancing with your favorite colleagues on Friday evening
- Tournaments for golfers and tennis players
- A spouse/guest culinary program presented by the hotel's new executive chef
- The President's Award Reception on Saturday evening
- The Meet-the-Candidates Reception after the debate
- Recreational and leisure activities as well as children's programs
Big debate
- One stage
- Two former governors -- the Republican a former U.S. senator, the Democrat a former national party chairman -- pitted in what news outlets have dubbed as "one of the most competitive Senate contests in the country" and "an epic battle."
- News media coverage

Legal Elite balloting under way |
Voting for the 2012 Legal Elite has begun. Electronic ballots were sent June 14 and 15 to about 11,600 lawyers across the state. An online ballot is available on the Virginia Business website .
Since 2000, The Virginia Bar Association
has advised Virginia Business magazine on categories of legal specialities and
has announced the balloting to our members. Voting for the Legal Elite, which recognizes outstanding lawyers in the commonwealth, is open to all licensed lawyers in Virginia. The deadline for this year's voting will be Aug. 8.
This 2012 Legal Elite ballot includes 16 categories, one of which, bankruptcy, has been broadened to include creditors' rights. |
Rules of Evidence become effective July 1 |
The Supreme Court of Virginia posted a 27-page PDF that contains the Rules of Evidence approved in the 2012 session of the General Assembly. The rules take effect on July 1, ending a quest that spanned 18 years. Virginia's rules change no doctrine or case law, and statutes related to evidentiary issues will remain in the Code of Virginia, with cross-references in the rules. |
Et cetera |
We hope you dropped by our booth at the Virginia State Bar annual meeting in Virginia Beach last week. It was the hot spot of the exhibition space and we anticipate gaining new members through this outreach. Check out the slideshow on our Facebook page.

Speaking of the project that Pace started, its website is undergoing a rebranding that recognizes the importance of ongoing funding from the Virginia Law Foundation, while still acknowledging the VBA.
