Legislative success |
The 2012 General Assembly session kept the VBA's new lobbyists busy. Team leader Jay Spruill III of Reed Smith LLP kept members updated with his dispatches in the winter and spring issues of the VBA Journal and on the Legislation page of the VBA website and the at-a-glance tables. Section members just received their legislative updates, one of the benefits of joining a VBA Section. |

The VBA welcomes new members.

Welcome to the new electronic newsletter from your Association. There's so much news and so many events going on that a compilation of them seems necessary to make sure you can get the most out of your membership.
Section-specific emails will still be sent, but we think sharing abbreviated notices of Section events in The VBA Voice is another way to build involvement. We hope you agree. |
Forever Tree honors Chief Justice Hassell

 |
Chief Justice Kinser shares inscription on plaque to be installed near Forever Tree. |
A maple tree, planted in memory of Chief Justice Leroy R. Hassell Sr., was dedicated on April 24 in Richmond. Current justices of the Supreme Court of Virginia shoveled mulch onto the Forever Tree, which will be cared for in perpetuity on Capitol Square. The ceremony followed the first part of the 2012 Chief Justice's Pro Bono Summit, held in the Court. Hassell encouraged Virginia lawyers and especially The Virginia Bar Association to promote pro bono publico work throughout Virginia. This year's summit meeting was the second such event planned by the VBA. |

VBA Journal gets makeovers in print and online | We have completely redesigned, and slightly renamed, the VBA Journal. Now a robust 40 pages, the full-color magazine more vividly depicts the Association in print and digital versions.
Professor A.E. Dick Howard penned our cover story, "The Virginia Constitution at 40." Between the covers, in addition to columns from officers and division heads, you'll find:
- Writer's Block
- Lobbyist's Perspective
- New member information
- A VBA Summer Meeting preview
- Tips on finding good clients
- Top 10 Things Never to Say to a Judge
- An update on eminent domain and the proposed amendment
- Tech topics: iPads, tablets and E-Discovery
Members will be mailed issues three times a year: in spring, in late summer and at the end of the year.
