PFLA "Show and Tell Forest Tours" Want You!
Private Managed Forest Land Council (PMFLC) members on  a "Show and Tell Tour" hosted by Island Timberlands and TimberWest.
It turns outs, of all the communication tools PFLA has at our disposal, the most valuable tool in the shed is the ever-popular, time-tested field trip. Taking key audiences out into the woods and showing them, firsthand, how we manage our private forest land is the most effective form of communication we've come across yet.

Morgan Kennah explains Island Timberlands' salvage operation and hazard abatement programs to PMFLC executive director, Stuart McPherson.

We can't emphasize enough how valuable these field trips are in helping illustrate our commitment to the stewardship of BC's private forests.

If you're a managed forest owner interested in hosting a tour, or if you're a stakeholder interested in visiting a managed forest, let us know. We'd love to have you participate.

PFLA Private Forest Matters

Greetings!

Welcome to the May 2012 edition of PFLA Private Forest Matters! You'll find details about what we've been up to, highlights about what we've got planned, wildfire prevention tips, and information about the the "Rudi Kind Memorial Scholarship". As always, we appreciate you taking the time to read through this edition of PFLA Private Forest Matters and look forward to hearing from you.

Remember when you were in high school? A big part of learning was reading: books, so many books. History, ideas, theories---- all communicated through words on paper. Maybe you were a straight-A student who devoured textbooks, wore out a pathway to the library and couldn't wait for your next homework assignment. Maybe you were less enthusiastic about ...[read more]

Wildfire poses a serious threat to forest management objectives. Here at the PFLA, we promote best management practices (BMPs) that help minimize potential risks and maximize forest health.

Along with a short video from Smokey Bear ('cause nobody says it quite like Smokey), we've put together 10 wildly successful tips to help prevent, and in the event that it happens, be prepared for, wildfires...[read more]

  • Banquet reception featuring the Private Forest Stewardship Award and the Rudi Kind Memorial Scholarship.
  • Private forestry forum examining: carbon credits, climate change, firefighting cost-sharing agreements, and an update from the Private Managed Forest Land Council.
All that and more! Stay-tuned for registration and scheduling details. Hope to see you there.
Rudi Kind Memorial Scholarship

The Rudi Kind Memorial

Scholarship was established in 2003 to celebrate the memory of founding PFLA member, and long-serving director, Rudi Kind. After immigrating to Canada, from Loehningen, Switzerland, in 1957, Rudi established himself as a highly respected forestry professional, and dearly loved colleague and friend to many.

By creating a memorial scholarship in Rudi's name, we hope to encourage and promote a future of forest resource management that reflects the same passion and thoughtfulness Rudi brought to his career.

Two awards of $500 each are available with preference given to direct family members of private forest landowners. Eligible applicants must be entering a resource management related program. For more information, and to download an application, please visit the PFLA website.

Thanks again for reading! Let us know what you think: send us an email, leave us a comment on the blog, visit our Facebook page or give us a call.

Sincerely,

Rod Bealing, Executive Director
