The Importance of "Knowing Your Numbers"

Did you know that 50% - 70% of all diseases are associated with modifiable health risks and are therefore preventable?

So helping people stay healthy and avoid illness makes good business sense. Offering onsite wellness programs is one of the most convenient, effective ways a company can help employees understand their health risks and make better choices about their lifestyles. That's the key to lasting behavior change and better health - and the best way to achieve long-term sustainable savings.

It's important to know where you are starting to know where it is you want to go! Even if you have already started a wellness program, but your employees have not had a biometric screening, it is not too late! And the great thing about doing this company-wide screening is that we can track your results from year-to-year, analyzing the effects of your wellness program efforts each year! It's a great tool to use to track success in your wellness program!

Cigna offers its onsite health and wellness resources to all new and renewing Cigna clients with 250 or fewer employees as part of your company's health and wellness program. To view a data sheet on Cigna's biometric screenings, click here.

So, what if your company is not insured through Cigna? There are plenty of other options and third-party vendors we can work with. Please contact Jamie in our office if you want to explore your options!

Wellness Programs Could Reduce Projected 2013 Health Care Cost Increases

"The cost of U.S. health care services is expected to rise 7.5% in 2013, ...but premiums for large employer-sponsored health plans could increase by only 5.5% as a result of company wellness programs..."

A 2% savings is a big deal. Click here to read the entire article.

The Start of Many New Beginnings
Greetings!

Welcome to our very 1st edition of "Step Into Wellness," a newsletter directed specifically towards workplace wellness. You are receiving this newsletter because in some shape or form, we've offered wellness program assistance to your company. If you are not interested in receiving this newsletter, you can simply click 'unsubscribe' at the bottom of this newsletter. However, we hope you will find this newsletter valuable in your workplace wellness endeavors.

As the 1st quarter of 2012 wraps up, this has been a busy year for us in terms of assisting our clients with implementing and developing workplace wellness programs. As we all know, the cost of health care is not cheap. And especially for those of you that are self-insured, the cost of health care is definitely not cheap if your employees are unhealthy. Outside of the cost savings, workplace wellness programs help create a healthy workplace culture and cultivate happier, healthier and more productive employees.

Being the 1st newsletter, in this issue we will provide you with resources that can help benefit your current wellness program. Make sure you take the time to read a client testimonial as well and how their wellness program has had a positive impact on their business and its employees. As the year progresses and we take each one of our clients on different paths down wellness, please don't ever hesitate to contact me for assistance.

Sincerely,

Jamie Dennis

Wellness Inspiration:
Kris Seidel, UNC Foundation

We asked Kris Seidel, Administrative Manager at the University of Northern Colorado Foundation, to share her story on what inspired her to start up a workplace wellness program in her office. Read how her own personal health journey led into a great program for the UNC Foundation and its employees!

I was inspired to pursue a wellness challenge in my office as I was really working hard to make better healthy decisions in my own life. I had recently turned 40 and was not where I wanted to be physically. I was overweight, out of shape, and lethargic! I needed extra "boosts" of caffeine at 3:00 to make it through my day and didn't feel like doing anything when I got home. My energy  level was nonexistent, my clothes didn't fit and my body hurt from doing the simplest of tasks so I decided to take steps to remedy my problems by just starting to make better decisions on a daily basis. I began to track my caloric intake, then reduce my calories, and then finally increase my physical activity to see if I could put myself on a better path. My entire goal was to feel better at 41 then I did at 40! And, it was working! By the time I reached my 41st birthday, I had dropped quite a few pounds and I was feeling more active, engaged and energetic and I had started to get comments from my friends and co-workers about how I was "looking great" and questions about what I was doing to lose the weight. That is about the time that I received the email from Shirazi Benefits talking about their wellness program and how our organization could enlist the services of someone to help us implement a wellness program in our office. It talked about the benefits of such a program and I thought it sounded like a fabulous idea and a fantastic benefit for our employees. It took me a while to make the time to meet with our wellness coordinator but, once I did, I was really excited about implementing in our office.

After my initial contact with Shirazi, Jamie came out to meet with me and we reviewed what was unique about our office and discussed strategies on how to implement a wellness program that would benefit our organization. Once we came up with the basics of the plan, I met with team-leaders in our group to see if there was enough interest to implement and I was pleasantly surprised about how excited people got about the challenge! Even before the first challenge began, there was a healthy buzz of competition throughout the office. There were even jokes around the office about how far away each of us would park so that we could "beat" the other person in steps each day!  It was great! The other thing I noticed was a diminishing number of sweet treats being dropped off in the break room. We seem to have a culture if office environments of sweet treats and snacks in break areas for everyone to share, which I think is great and very generous, but not necessarily in the best interests of your employees and especially not great when you know that people, in general, could benefit from healthier habits AND you personally are trying to reduce your bad decisions and decrease your caloric intake each day. The little temptations encountered throughout your day make better decisions a bit more difficult. The counter to that is that when everyone is talking about eating their 3 vegetables and 2 fruits each day and how to get all 68 ounces of water in, it makes healthier habits more fun, better decisions easier, and staying focused on your results much less difficult.

As we have just wrapped up our first 8 week challenge, I would say our overall results are fantastic. We had 21 of 28 people sign up for the program and, going into it, I felt that if we helped one person become more healthy, then we would be winning. What ended up happening was that we all became more educated and enlightened AND we helped multiple people become more healthy. An example of this is that our group average BMI (for those that reported) dropped from the overweight range of over 25% down to the healthy weight range of below 25% and we had several true successes with health improvements and weight loss. Personally, the wellness program helped me to continue to stay on track and I have continued my own weight loss and steps towards improved health and look forward to feeling better at 42 than I did at 41!
