A Happy Back (to School)

There's a hot new trend in backpacks recently:  Pain

This new trend among youngsters isn't surprising when you consider the disproportionate amounts of weight they carry in their bags - often slung over just one shoulder.

Rollerpacks - or backpacks on wheels - might seem to be a good answer to this problem, but some school districts have banned the use of these because they clutter hallways; resulting in dangerous trips and falls.

The problem of heavy bags has become so widespread that the California State Assembly passed legislation that would force school districts to develop ways of reducing the weight of students' backpacks.

When you head out to the store this fall, we have a few buying and fitting tips to keep in mind.

Chiropractic Care Can Help:

If you or your child experiences any pain or discomfort resulting from backpack use, call LGCWC. Children usually require far less treatment and in a much gentler fashion than in adults. We also prescribe exercises designed to help children develop strong muscles, along with instruction on good nutrition, posture and sleeping habits.

Read the FULL article here including a few examples of backpacks endorsed by the Amercian Chiropractic Association as meeting all the requirements for excellent anatomical fit, weight distribution and comfort.

Fennel and Onions

Caramelized Fennel and Onion

Eat it as a side dish, atop burgers, pizza, or salads.

Also pairs well with pork, chicken, or fish!

  • 1-2 TB oil
  • 1 fennel bulb, trimmed and thinly sliced
  • 1 Lg yellow or red onion, trimmed and thinly sliced
  • salt to taste

Heat oil in pan. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until fennel and onion begin to brown.

Turn heat down if it's browning too fast. Reduce heat to medium-low. Stir occasionally until soft, 30 minutes or so.  Salt to taste and serve.
