This week's Member Monday features the Hays Free Press. The Hays Free Press, formerly known as the Onion Creek Free Press and the Hays County Free Press, began as a combination of Bob Barton's Hays County Citizen (formerly the Kyle News), the Austin Sun and the River City Sun. Barton purchased these additional publications in 1978, changed the format and pushed the paper into what it is today - a well-respected journal covering southern Travis County and Hays County. Barton had purchased the Kyle News while he was still in college in the 1950s from its original founders, the Harwell family, who founded the newspaper in 1903.

We posed the question, "What value do you find in being a member of the Chamber?" Owner and publisher Cyndy Slovak-Barton responded: "Lots! If we are not networking through the Ambassador Bashes, then we are getting to know new businesses at the monthly luncheons and the Business Expo. As the oldest business in Buda and Kyle (founded in 1903), the Hays Free Press is here to stay. As the only local news medium with offices in Kyle AND Buda, we find the Chamber to be important when it comes to welcoming new businesses and getting to know the owners."

In her own words, Cyndy describes the importance of the local newspaper: "See the trend here? Local, local, local. That's what drives this newspaper, and it's what brings us readers. And what do more readers - whether in print or online - mean to businesses? More people seeing your advertisements and the name of your business. It's the local touch that makes all the difference."

Open House
Learn more, ask questions and provide valuable feedback at this informal, come-and-go event.
Tuesday, Jan 10, 5-8 p.m.
Seton Medical Center Hays - Cafeteria, 6001 Kyle Parkway, Kyle, TX

Project Connect is aimed at implementing the high-capacity transit component of the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) 2035 Plan. The initial Project Connect partnership includes
the City of Austin, Capital Metro, the Lone Star Rail District and CAMPO.

Over the next several months, the Project Connect team will reach out to the public to build consensus and answer the following questions:
  • How will high-capacity transit components in the CAMPO 2035 Regional Transportation Plan work as a system?
  • How will our region organize to develop and operate the system?
  • How will we pay for the system over the long term?
More information is available on the Project Connect Web Site.
