Kyle approves redistricting plan that maintains part of Old Town in each district
After the 2010 census revealed a population increase, the City of Kyle finalized a plan that redraws three City Council districts while aiming to maintain neighborhood cohesiveness, adhere to committee member goals and take into account the interests of residents.
The changes to single-member districts 2, 4 and 6 affect more than 20 percent of the population, or about 6,000 residents, and were sent to the U.S. Department of Justice for approval Nov. 16. City officials said they expect the department to finalize the plan by February.
Kyle has grown from 5,988 people in 2001, when the current district boundaries were drawn, to 28,016 in 2010. The need for a new plan was the result of uneven growth patterns in certain districts. Read more.

Ed Foundation Gives More Than $40,000 to Campuses
Hays CISD Education Foundation board members enjoyed what's probably their favorite activity last week, touring the district in a school bus laden with flowers, balloons and--most importantly--jumbo checks for teachers. It was that time of year when Innovative Teaching Grants of up to $5,000 go out for creative ideas destined to have academic impact on large groups of the district's students. This season's additional twist was the first time availability of Mini-Grants of up to $500 for equally innovative ideas requiring less money to implement. When all of the "Congratulations!" balloons and all of the flower bouquets had been delivered-many in front of excited, cheering student classes-the Education Foundation had awarded more than $40,000 to individual teachers and cooperating groups. From fitness kits to sets of iPod Touches, and everything in between, almost two dozen grants were funded, giving the Christmas season an early boost on campuses across the district.
