Kellie Coates Gilbert with her high school English teacher Ken Mecham
Author Kellie Coates Gilbert returned home last week, visiting her alma mater in Carey. Coates is on a book tour promoting her book, Mother of Pearl. Raised on a sheep ranch outside of Carey, Coates credits the bi-weekly bookmobile in Carey, as well as her grandmother, for nurturing her love of reading. She visited with Carey students last week, telling them that her path to writing included keeping journal every day since the 7th grade.
