5th Grade Students Tour Washington D.C.
Hemingway Elementary teacher Sandy Scott took students to Washington D.C. - an annual tradition for five years. She writes, "we went to Williamsburg, Jamestown and the Capitol in five action-packed days. We visited museums, memorials, and monuments. We lived history in historic places and the experience reinforced many things we've learned in the classroom, particularly civics lessons during our visits to the Supreme Court, the Capitol and the White House." |
Larry Barnes Attends Biodiesel Conference
Wood River High School biology teacher Larry Barnes attended the Bioenergy Institute in Madison, Wisconsin with 22 other teachers from across the nation who have an interest in and/or curriculum that includes biofuels in their high school or community college courses. The workshop focused on biodiesel, a fuel made from vegetable oil that works in diesel engines.
Barnes has been making biodiesel for about 5 years in an apparatus he built. He collaborates with WRHS math teacher Glen Lindsley - the two teachers make about 400-500 gallons a year from waste oil collected from local restaurants. They have mentored several students for Senior Projects, the high school's independent research project that is required for graduation. Barnes writes, "we currently do not include biodiesel in our curriculum but it might happen in the future."
The Blaine County School District's commitment to clean energy and sustainable environmental practices is part of the BCSD Strategic Plan. |
