Green Update
LEED 2012's second draft is currently open for comment through September, 12, 2011. The Materials and Resources Credit Category (MR) and the Indoor Environmental Quality Category (EQ) have both undergone some restructuring. Some highlights include:
Materials and Resources (MR)
- All previous credits (Materials Reuse, Recycled Content, Regional Materials, Rapidly Renewable Materials, and Certified Wood) have been deleted.
- FSC® Mixed percentage category to be eliminated - Only 100% FSC® Pure products would qualify. This will be met with strong resistance from the FSC® organizations since the only 100% pure products are solid lumber and veneer. Currently, Eggers' doors, veneer-wrapped frames and plywood qualify for the FSC® Mixed percentage.
- Credits available for products which are self-certified or third-party certified for environmentally sound attributes such as lifecycle assessment, recycled content, support local economy (regional materials), and biobased materials.
- The new draft also eliminates other forest management organizations from contributing to the certified wood credit.
Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ)
- The major change to this credit is the elimination of the no added urea-formaldehyde credit and replacing it with Carb Phase 2.
As you can see, the environmental requirements for Green products are dynamic and always evolving to further raise the bar. As these programs evolve we will continue to pursue materials and constructions which meet these market demands.
