Hello and welcome to the January edition of the Penn Cove Shellfish Newsletter!
Winter is in full swing here at Penn Cove and this month the Seattle area experienced an epic snow storm, which buried western Washington under a foot of snow in mid January. In the Seattle area, with all the hills in the area any snow or ice creates quite the mayhem in the metro area.
As fast as the weather came in and clobbered us, within days the snow totally disappeared and we were back to our milder than average winter. Which is great news for shellfish growth.
Although the inclement weather may sometimes slow harvesting down, we are always working hard out on the water, in the office and on the road to keep our shellfish rolling out the door and delivered in a timely manner. Over the 36 years of being in business, we have only missed 3 days of shipments. We know how important it is to have a constant supply of our products in your establishments and we put tremendous effort into making sure our shellfish make the scheduled deliveries.
We always invite you to check out our oyster evaluation evaluation page, that we post every week on our website www.penncoveshellfish.com.

Penn Cove Launches Another New Vessel |
In December, our boat building shop doing business as Everest Marine launched another new work boat for Coast Seafoods. This vessel is a Clam Seed Scow and will be used at the Humboldt Bay clam nursery in Eureka, California.
This twin engine scow is a purpose built vessel. The main design focus was to build a large, stable work scow for hauling and working with trays of clam seed from the clam nursery rafts in Humboldt Bay.
The scow is 43 feet long by 16 feet wide and only draws 6 inches of water. The twin 150 HP outboard engines provide ample power to get the clam seed and crew to the nursery rafts. There is a knuckle crane mounted to easily lift the seed trays to and from the boat.
We will complete fabrication and launch another oyster harvest vessel for Coast in February so look forward to more boat pictures next month. |
Penn Cove Manila Clams |
Fresh, farm raised Manila Clams straight from the beaches of the Puget Sound and the Washington coast!
At Penn Cove Shellfish, we sell three sizes of Manila Clams: The medium sized (1.5"- 1.75") Manila Clams are most popular along with theHilton Petite Manila Clams (1.25"), and then the large (1.75"-2.5") Manila Clams.
From smallest to largest, the three sizes would almost equate to pasta necks, little necks and top necks for you east coast consumers. All three sizes are great, steam open evenly and and work well for different preparations, (buckets of steamers versus pasta clams versus half shells, etc.)! |
