                                  March 2011

March in like a lion and hopefully out like a lamb.

Looks like winter is slowly but surely releasing its cold and bitter grip around the country. Up here, north of Seattle, we were treated to a not so pleasant snow storm at the beginning of March but lucky for us it melted after a week and the sun came out for our 25th annual Penn Cove Musselfest.

Here at Penn Cove Shellfish, March is the Golden Month for mussel growth. As the Cascade mountains start to melt off the winter snowpack fresh nutrients are brought into Penn Cove by the Skagit and Stilliquamish rivers. That coupled with a little more sunshine creates the perfect conditions for growing algae, the natural food source for Penn Cove Mussels.

Extra food in the cove means fuller, tastier shellfish, so as always, we invite you to view our weekly oyster evaluation. It's our best way to communicate the up to the moment status report on our 26 varieties of oysters.

Boston Seafood Show time is here!

Boston Booth display 08

The International Boston Seafood Show will be next week on March 20-22 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition hall. We will once again be in booth #950 with our shellfish partners at Coast Seafoods. We always enjoy seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Of course the show is all about creating new business opportunies and we are very excited for the opportunity to share the story about our products and explain why we are your best choice for fresh mussels, clams and oysters.

Penn Cove and Shellfish Sustainability

Why are Penn Cove Shellfish a Sustainable Seafood ?

Sustainable - To paraphrase Aldo Leopold, sustainable means taking resources from the environment only if it does not disturb the "integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic community," and doing so in such a way that our world can naturally replenish itself. All that this planet has to offer has to be maintained to ensure a healthy environment for generations to come.

Mussel rafts create habitat in the marine ecosystem - The ecosystem services and biodiversity resulting from the expanded habitat is a positive feature of shellfish farming.  Herring, smelt, shrimp, seals and seabirds are just a few of the many species of marine life thrive living in and around our mussel rafts and lines.

Improves water Quality- A single mussel can filter up to 15 gallons seawater per day.  The algae consumed by the mussels feeding removes nitrogen and other nutirients, which in excess may cause for too much algae to grow and then crash thereby creating low dissolved oxygen problems.  When the algae is consumed by the mussels, the water quality clarity and quality also improve by allowing more sun to penetrate into the water, which then creates a better environment for sea grasses and benthic species. Thus more food and habitat for the entire ecosystem.

Nothing added, everything gained - We do not feed, fertilize or use any drug on any of our shellfish. All we do is provide our shellfish a safe habitat and room to thrive.

Water quality - The water quality of Penn Cove and Quilcene Bay are consistently monitored for pollution and naturally occurring harmful algae blooms. Our over sight and dependence on clean water over the last 36 years have helped to insure our water quality for the long term.  Addtionally, our two facilities are located over 40 miles apart, so we are always assured of a continuous supply of clean, healthy product.

No invasive species - Since we only work with indigenous or naturalized species, there is not a threat of non-native life forms being introduced to marine ecosystem.

Traceability -  Penn Cove Shellfish are double tagged with the harvest date and area harvested. With our double tagging it allows one to be removed for record keeping and one to remain with the shellfish bag at all times until fully used. You can be assured that your sustainable shellfish from Penn Cove are always HAACP certified through our shellfish safety tagging system.

2011 Mussel Boat  2011mf eating comp
Lot's of smiling faces on the Boat Tours and around town as visitors from Vancouver B.C. all the way down to Portland Oregon made the special trip to Coupeville to take part in all the events.
From the mussel eating competition, Guest Chef demonstrations, chowder tasting contest to the live music and shopping in Coupeville a good time was had by all. We do the festival to connect with the community and share our story but ultimately its all for a great cause.. The Boys and Girls Club of Coupeville receive all the profits generated from the MusselFest Beer Garden food and merchandise sales and even the tips jar proceeds.  We couldn't have done it without our great sponsors at Sierra-Nevada Brewing and Flyer's Restaurant and Brewery.  Thank you to all of you volunteers who took part in this years Musselfest..See you all next year!!

We look forward to the event and visiting with our St. Louis customers and friends and hope that if you are in the area, that you will come by and join us.

Taking a minute for a Personal message from Ian

Ian Jefferds,General Manager - Penn Cove Shellfish
Our hearts and prayers go out to those affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan.  Many of those directly impacted were in fishing and shellfish communities and are in need of assistance, so please do what you can to help in that regards.

As we move farther into 2011, I thought I would share with you our production goals. We are presently harvesting our new 2011 crop of Mediterranean Mussels (Mytilus galloprovencilais), and will begin to also harvest our Penn Cove Mussels (Mytilus trossulus), the beginning of April.  We will be offering both species of mussels from that point forward and we are looking to make this a record production year!

Since we moved into our new packing plant in January, we have been working on bringing new  efficiencies to our operations to insure that you are provided shellfish as it should be tasted, always "Fresh From the Water-Not the Warehouse!"  If you should find yourself up on Whidbey Island, please give us a call so that we can show you around.

Oyster of the Month the Stellar Bay

Stellar Bay
This month's oyster is the Stellar Bay. A boutique, pacific oyster grown in Baynes Sound on Vancouver Island, this big brother of the Kusshi Oyster is always a excellent choice for a half shell oyster.  Tray raised in the middle of Deep Bay, they are pulled from the water periodically and "tumbled". This process breaks off the outer edge of shell growth and actually "stunts" the growth of the shell outward, creating a very uniform, deep cupped oysters. The results are first a very clean "pretty oyster" on the outside and since it has a deep cup plenty of  room for full meat and a nice somewhat briny nectare. This is one oyster that in which you can realy taste the ocean and it is a must try for any menu or market offering.

Today Show Video

This March our friend Chef Robert Wiedmaier stopped by the Today show to cook Penn Cove Mussels.  Here's the video from his segment. Thanks Chef!
