Metro Launches $10,000 Matching Fund for Donations that Aid Active Duty Military
Let's Work Together to Support Our Troops
To give back to the men and women who currently serve in America's armed forces, we've pledged to match your contributions to either the Wounded Warrior Project or the National Military Family Association. The Metro Supports the Military Challenge will match qualifying individual donations of $10 to $100 made before Labor Day 2012, up to a total of $10,000. For details and donation information, visit www.metroalert.com/military.
In a related effort called Metro Salutes Those Who Served, we're also saluting police officers who previously served in the armed forces. Honorees will be featured in a series of sponsored articles appearing in law enforcement publications. First in the series is an interview with Vietnam veteran and Springfield, Pa. Police Chief Joe Daly, which is featured in the summer issue of PCPA Bulletin, the magazine of the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association. Throughout the year, Metro will similarly honor additional police officers who are also veterans.

Version 2.12.1 is available for download. To download the update and the instructions for performing the update, click here. (Note: If you are a Chester County Department, please do not download the update without first contacting us.) Below are highlights of the modifications made in the release:
UCR
- The UCR Report will now display the correct count of incidents and stolen property values presented, minus the count and stolen property values of unfounded incidents from previously reported incidents.
- Fixed issue where a report happened in a previous month and then was cleared in the current month, and the Offenses Cleared column was not showing the correct count.
- Fixed the issue where all the property on the UCR D1 Report was totaling in the "K - Miscellaneous" line.
- Fixed the issue where the UCR Report was counting the number of persons in the role of "Victim" in any of the role fields in the incident when there were Additional Classifications. According to the hierarchy rule, it should only be checking for the role of "Victim" against the Primary Classification in the incident.
- Fixed the issue involving a homicide with multiple victims and the UCR file was not completing the offender's information after the first victim.
Alarms
- The Alarm Letter utility will now print the correct letter format for the appropriate Alarm Activation.
General Letters
- Added radio button to allow the user to select Active Alarm Accounts Only (default).
Evidence
- Searching evidence information by badge number will now return results.
- Evidence Barcode Tags can now print on a Zebra Barcode Label Printer.
- Evidence Inventory has been updated to display all evidence items except those marked as Disposed.

- The multimedia form will close down automatically after you select a different form within the incident.
- Fixed the issue when a user double clicked on the image and tried to print or view the image and received the following error message "the page size was not large enough to format the contents of the object in the report."
Miscellaneous
- Fixed the issue where the Missing Persons Report was not displaying the correct age for the Missing Persons listed.
- Fixed the issue with Time Display under Incident Management. All options under this menu will now display the time using the 24 hour clock.

- Fixed issue involving Businesses being deleted from the Business List.
Parking
- Now, if a Parking Authority has their own ORI, and the Police Department writes tickets that are processed by the Parking Authority, the ticket has the Police Department's ORI number for the ticket, not the Parking Authorities ORI.

Quick Forms
- The Warning Citation form may now be adjusted by the user so they no longer have to scroll down the form.

Police Movie Pick
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law
When you think of great detectives, Sherlock Holmes has to be near the top of any list. But when a detective's heyday was back in the 1800s - as Holmes' was - it's hard for the stories not to seem a little dated to modern audiences. Until, that is, director Guy Ritchie got his hands on them. In 2009, Ritchie gave Holmes and his sidekick Watson an overdue injection of adrenaline and turned the world of Holmes into a fun house of big explosions, gunplay, manic chases and hang-on-to-your-seat adventures. All that testosterone proved successful at the box office for Ritchie's debut Sherlock Holmes movie, and now he's provided a second dose with Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Out this month on DVD, Shadows has Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and Watson (Jude Law) facing off against the evil Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), a "Napoleon of crime" who provides a formidable adversary for Holmes' skills. In this take, Moriarity is killing off heads of state and captains of industry, destabilizing Europe and causing havoc that could even lead to war. Holmes is up to the challenge, of course, even as a scruffy Downey is firing off one-liners, dodging punches and generally playing the smart-ass to Law's straight man. Special effects take the caper over the top, and if you like jam-packed action scenes, don't leave the room during the one on the train. |
Police Book Pick
Fun House by Chris Grabenstein
Chris Grabenstein has won a wide following for his crime novels set at the Jersey Shore - each named after a boardwalk attraction. In fast succession, he's given us Tilt a Whirl, Mad Mouse, Whack a Mole, Hell Hole, Mind Scrambler and Rolling Thunder, and now - just in time for the summer season - he's turned out Fun House. Set in the fictional town of Sea Haven, Fun House again puts macho cop John Ceepak and his wisecracking partner Danny Boyle to work solving murders. But this time, their job is made more complicated by the fact that they've also been assigned to a reality TV show as security, with the task of keeping the contestants in line.
This proves a challenge, since the show is a kind of cross between American Idol and Jersey Shore, and the players like to party long, hard and drunkenly. One of them ends up dead, of course, and from there the book heats up in riotous and compelling ways. Quoting Bruce Springsteen as they go, Ceepak and Boyle soon are tussling with a drug dealer named Skeletor, a motorcycle gang and the Jersey mob while trying to track a loon threatening to take out another cast member of the show on the air. As always, Grabenstein loads his writing with humor and one-liners that will make you laugh out loud, particularly when he takes aim at reality TV, and contestants' compulsion to do JUST ANYTHING to get a few seconds more screen time. If you haven't been Down the Shore yet, take a stroll through Fun House and it will get you in the mood.

Police Hero Pick
When they go above and beyond ...
What does it take to be a hero? For many people, bold action is what comes to mind first - running into a burning building to save someone, performing CPR, pulling a child from flood waters. But sometimes, quieter actions earn police and firefighters respect as heroes. Consider the case of Pennsylvania Police Officer Ray Reynolds, whose beyond-the-call actions made Memorial Day more complete for an 80-year-old Navy veteran. Reynolds is an officer in Dunmore Borough near Scranton, and this year he was one of the officers trying to solve a series of flag thefts from homes leading up to Memorial Day. Eighty-year-old Edward Mathewson of Scranton was one of the homeowners whose flags were stolen. His was hand sewn and had been brought back by his son-in-law from Afghanistan, so he was disappointed to find that his flag was not one of those recovered by police in their first round of investigation. That would have been the end of it for some officers, but not for Reynolds. He stayed on the case, and by the next morning he not only had found Mathewson's flag, he had put it back on the pole next to Mathewson's house, so he would see it when he woke up. "I didn't even know it until I got up," Mathewson said. "And there it is in the front yard, installed by the Dunmore Police Department." Dunmore Police Chief Patrick Reese said Officer Reynolds didn't want to be recognized for going the extra mile, but the chief felt people should know. "He took that upon himself to do that," Reese said. "That's just the type of guy he is, though. He goes above and beyond to do the right thing." That's a hero in our book. Police Perp Pick
When they make our job easy ...
Facebook is a great way to get to know people, and it's a great way for people to get to know you. That's usually a good thing, unless you're a thief who's not the sharpest tool in the box. Take the case of 20-year-old Michael Baker of Jenkens, Kentucky. He had the bright idea to steal gas for his car from a parked police cruiser. That was risky enough, but Baker then raised the ante by posting a photo of himself siphoning the tank, grinning and flipping local officers the bird. The image was quickly passed around town and, not surprisingly, was seen by police, who picked Baker up and charged him. The photo has since been taken down, but Baker's Facebook page is still up. And he apparently hasn't learned much from the experience, posting "yeah LOL I went to jail over Facebook." (Source: thedailywh.at website.)
