Fall fields are a Long Island favorite

Well, October's crisp air and refreshing breezes signals the start of our yearly involvement with wonderful organizations whose members serve the senior population. Care Connection is proud to be a member of these organizations whose names include The Senior Umbrella Network, Gerontology Professionals of New York and The Long Island Coalition for the Aged. I am personally proud to have formed the Advocacy Committee of The Senior Umbrella Network several years ago and served as its Co-Chair.  The committee will continue its fine work again this year.

Care Connection staff members, Beth Rosenthal and Lesley Blydenburgh represented Care Connection at Senator Kemp Hannon's 8th Annual Senior Health Expo held each year at Hofstra University.  We were pleased that many seniors visited our table and left with a thorough understanding of the services we provide.

This month we are honored to feature Hospice of New York and their liaison for us, Mrs. Pat Kiley.

Pat considers her work with Hospice of New York as more of a ministry than a job, and feels privileged to accompany individuals and families in end-of-life care. Pat can always be found out in the community doing hospice education and community relations work with doctors, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living residences, rehab centers, home care agencies, senior centers, church groups, geriatric care managers, elder law attorneys and discharge planners.

Hospice of New York is an amazing resource to the community, and we will gladly help spread the word about the valuable role they play. Pat considers her work with Hospice of New York as more of a ministry than a job, and feels privileged to accompany individuals and families in end-of-life care.

You can receive Hospice care even if you live longer than six months, provided your doctor certifies you are terminally ill. If your health improves you can go off hospice care but can return should the need arise.

Even though a doctor is a part of the Hospice team, you can choose to use your regular doctor, who might not be par

t of the hospice, to get care.

If you are eligible for Medicare, you pay no more than $5 for each prescription drug and other similar products.

Social Connection

Client vs Companion

Many clients are resistant to care....

It is a wonderful feeling when you can provide someone's family member with a companion that is a perfect match for them and change their whole view of what it is to have a caregiver; to be non resistant to this person, and welcome them into their home and look forward to seeing them when they arrive, and to treat them like a member of their family - It can change a senior's whole way of life.

Consider companion care for your loved one!
