jonesBeachBeauty_1_374x280.jpg Oh Those Summer Days!

Welcome to Care Connection Companion Services August e-newsletter.

And yes, those summer days are just stacking up in our rear view mirror.

I love scenes like above. They remind me everyday of why we live in one of the best communities in the country.

Our goal with this monthly correspondence is to share information from trusted colleagues and community advocates, who can help us all to improve the lives of seniors, those with disabilities, and their family caregivers throughout our community.

This month's featured colleague is Susan Baida, Co-Founder & CMO, eCareDiary.com

Susan knows first-hand the challenges of caring for elderly loved ones. For 8 years, she cared for her grandmother who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. She is now a sandwich generation caregiver, coordinating care for her parents while raising a 3 year old daughter and expecting twins this summer.

Susan is a certified Geriatric Scholar and brings to the company a wealth of professional experience. Prior to joining her husband, John Mills, as Co-Founder, Susan served as a VP of Marketing at Starwood Hotels and held executive positions with Estee Lauder, Clinique, and Avon.

We have lots going on this month and next for the advocacy and improvement of care for our seniors. On the media side of things... I will be a guest on the "Empowering Family Caregivers" show on BlogTalkRadio.com. The date is August 23rd at 2pm. Please tune in.

Just go to www.BlogTalkRadio.com and search for the "Empowering Family Caregivers" show. It's a free on-line radio show, brought to you by our friends at eCareDiary.com. We will be discussing diverse aspects of eldercare and caregiving.

And this week, we are holding a training on Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease on Wed Aug 10 at the Brandywine Assisted Living at the Savoy. Alana Rosenstein, LMSW from The Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation will hold the training for us.

Next month, September, is the Advocacy committee meeting for the Senior Umbrella Network.  For more information visit this link. http://www.seniorumbrella.org/sunn/about.htm

Thank you again for spending some time with us. If we can be of assistance, now or in the future, please don't hesitate to call our offices, or email us at care1100@aol.com

eCare Diary is a website created based on the founder's, John Mills, experience as a caregiver for his father who suffered from Parkinson's Disease.  Having spent over 20 years working in the health care system, John found coordinating long term care to be difficult because of the lack of good information.  eCare Diary provides comprehensive information, tools and resources to help those seeking and providing long term care.

A unique feature is our Care Diary, a set of online tools designed to make coordination of care and sharing of information easy amongst family members and other caregivers.  eCare Diary also has a comprehensive database of nursing home and home care services, guides on long term care financing and information on important health care documents everyone should have.  The site will continue to grow and more information and tools will be added in the months ahead.  We hope eCare Diary helps simplify your situation by providing you the tools and information you need. We welcome your feedback and appreciate any ideas to improve the site. www.ecarediary.com

Financing Long Term Care

Dealing with a long term or chronic condition for yourself or a loved one is an emotionally draining experience.  Unfortunately, it is also expensive and most people cannot afford to pay for it out of pocket for any length of time.

When people discuss long term care, they are generally referring to care for people who have trouble performing activities of daily living (ADL) such as walking, dressing, bathing, preparing food, and brushing your teeth.

In the case of people who cannot perform ADLs, there are a range of care options with the most common being home health care, assisted living, and nursing home care.  These services can get quite expensive but there are a number of ways in which people can pay for part or all of their long term care needs.

Susan is a graduate of Emory University and  earned a Geriatric Scholar Certification from the Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers. The program trains medical and healthcare professionals to help improve care and services provided for the aging.

Social Connection

Is your loved one eating well?

Health issues and physical limitations can make it difficult to maintain good nutrition.   Medication side effects, poor dental health, dexterity problems, depression and dementia can contribute to malnutrition.

Companions can food shop and prepare meals for clients. Meals are more enjoyable when shared as the socialization process reduces loneliness.

Consider companion care for your loved one!
