When I started out as an advisor I had a mentor, Ed Coyle, who told me all I really need in any meeting is a pencil and pad of paper. I found this to be absolutely the truth after many years of wielding these instruments in very simple ways.
A common meeting we have is with a pre-retiree trying to determine if they have enough money to retire. We hand them a pencil and pad of paper. We have them draw a graph. They are instructed to fill in the points on the graph at retirement and for every five years into the future against total investable assets. If their assets support their retirement, then the line steadily climbs. Most of time this happens, however in their mind, they are fearful that the line will drift down and disappear below the $0 horizon before they die, the classic "end up on the street" scenario.
