Join us for AIS Action Day
Want to help keep the Lower Wisconsin River free from aquatic invasive species? Then join us and a group of other concerned citizens and conservation professionals for AIS (Aquatic Invasive Species) Action Day. From 9am to 2pm, Saturday, July 28, the group will take to the waters and boat landings of the Lower Wisconsin River, where they will be identifying and mapping AIS on the river, learning to prevent their introduction and spread, and ensuring boaters are complying with AIS laws.
"AIS Action Day" is a family-friendly event that will focus on educating participants on AIS issues, and providing them information on what they can do about a sometimes overwhelming topic. The event is free and open to the public, but participants must RSVP in advance and provide their own watercraft.
The River Alliance of Wisconsin has organized AIS Action Day in partnership with local conservation group Friends of the Lower Wisconsin Riverway (FLOW), Dane and Sauk counties, Wisconsin DNR conservation wardens and water guard, and Southwest Badger Resource, Conservation, and Development.
AIS Action Day participants will paddle from Sauk City to the County Y "Blackhawk" landing, identifying and mapping invasive plants along the way, and playing "river bingo." On the river, paddlers will experience interactive demonstrations on invasive zebra mussels and native mussels, unique floodplain fishes that can be affected by AIS, proper gear and equipment disinfection, and how to monitor for AIS on their own.
A picnic will follow the paddle, where participants will have further opportunities to learn about and observe additional AIS specimens and have access to AIS educational resources. Conservation wardens will also be present to talk to the group about AIS laws.
To participate in AIS Action Day, RSVP is required. Contact Matt Krueger at the River Alliance of Wisconsin at mkrueger@wisconsinrivers.org, or 608-257-2424 x125. Participants should bring a kayak and/or canoe, PFDs, paddles, water, and sunscreen. Children are welcome, provided they have adult supervision.
