How far will this administration go in their rush to please the mining companies? Sens. Schultz and Jauch aren't waiting to find out.

Rocking the Vote In the continuing saga of the push to rewrite Wisconsin's laws governing iron mining, a glimmer of hope. The pressure is on to pass changes in the law so the Governor's office and Legislature can claim to have created jobs. Whether changes in mining law would actually lead to new Wisconsin jobs is unknown, but if the Assembly's terrible mining bill, AB 426, were to pass, the destruction of lakes, rivers, wetlands and groundwater in the way of a mining operation is a certainty. For the Senate to pass AB 426, every Republican member would have to vote yes, but Senator Dale Schultz has courageously said no. Senators Dale Schultz and Robert Jauch joined together and developed a new proposal that reflects the needs of GTac, the mining company proposing a new mine in northern Wisconsin, as well as the thousands of citizens from around the state who have spoken out in opposition to the weakening of protections for the environment and local communities. The new bill: - Establishes a reasonable timeline for the permit process, which is all GTac has publically said they need;
- Allows citizens to challenge the permit decision;
- Ensures the mining company covers all the costs of permitting;
- Provides funds for the communities that will be affected by a mining operation to maintain their infrastructure; and
- Retains all current environmental protections.
We want to thank Senators Schultz and Jauch for listening and developing a reasonable bill, but now is not the time to be complacent. Leadership in both the Assembly and Senate pooh-poohed the new bill the minute it was released, and the pressure to move ahead with AB 426 remains fierce.
So we need to keep the pressure on too, especially in the Senate. The Joint Finance Committee will be taking up AB 426 and the Schultz/Jauch version this Friday; and whatever emerges would likely be up for a vote on the Senate floor shortly thereafter. The JFC and your Senator need to hear that you're with Senators Schultz and Jauch.
Just say no to AB 426, and any attempts at compromise that look, smell or taste like AB 426. |
River Alliance Joins Lake Property Owners to Challenge 130-Million Gallon Well For Cows
The River Alliance has joined forces with the Pleasant Lake Management District (PMLD) in asking if allowing up to 130 million gallons of water per year to be pumped out of the ground for a massive dairy farm makes any sense for the groundwater resource.The PLMD filed a contested case hearing challenging the Wisconsin DNR's decision to give a well permit to Richfield Dairy (part of the infamous Milk Source dairy empire and owner of Rosendale Farm), which plans to put over 4,000 milk cows in eastern Adams County. Pleasant Lake is about two miles away from where Richfield plans to install its high-capacity well and is, in groundwater terms, upstream of Pleasant Lake.
The lake's water level has dropped several feet over the past 20 years, likely from irrigation for agriculture, and property owners there feel another huge high-capacity well could suck even more groundwater away from the lake.
The contested case hearing could provide an interesting test for the so-called Lake Beulah decision, whereby the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that if DNR had credible evidence that a big well might affect nearby surface water, if had to take that evidence into account when it gave a permit for the well. PLMD and River Alliance contend that DNR had "credible evidence" showing the well would harm Pleasant Lake, but ignored it.
That will be the heart of the contested case hearing, which will likely be heard sometime this summer. |
