Don't Stop Now - It's Working!

The powerful Joint Finance Committee of the state legislature has started to take votes on the state budget, and it's clear they have been getting the message from their constituents:  messing with important water quality laws in the budget is just plain wrong.   The non-partisan and highly respected Legislative Fiscal Bureau identified 46 items in the Governor's proposed budget that have nothing to do with the fiscal well-being of Wisconsin, and a handful of water quality issues are on the list.  At the first JFC meeting last Tuesday, a motion to remove all 46 non-fiscal items from the budget was proposed, and while the motion failed, Senators Luther Olsen (Ripon) and Sheila Harsdorf (River Falls) broke party ranks and voted yes!

Could it be Senator Olsen, whose district has more pooping cows than people, and Senator Harsdorf, whose district includes Tainter and Menomin Lakes, have been hearing from folks they're fed up with stinking algae in their waters and want the new phosphorus rules to be implemented NOW?  Other watershed groups around the state have been reporting positive responses from their legislators too, so momentum is building.  While the JFC didn't act to sweep away all the non-fiscal issues, you can bet there will be motions made to delete each one at a time.  We don't know when the water quality rules or DNR's budget in general will be on the JFC's agenda, so it's extra important to keep the pressure on.

Keep contacting your legislators and especially the members of the Joint Finance Committee (and if you're in Senator Olsen's or Senator Harsdorf's district, be sure to thank them and ask them to keep it up!), and tell them:

  • Maintain the rules for limiting phosphorus in waterways.
  • Keep oversight of commercial construction site erosion control in DNR.
  • Maintain the rules for reducing polluted runoff from cities.

Can't Wait To Get Back Out On The River Again...
The spring melt is on and with it lots of fun plans for getting out on the rivers.  Mark your calendars and RSVP ASAP so we can plan accordingly...

May 21 - Louis' Bluff by Land and Water
We'll paddle a two-mile stretch of the Wisconsin River, upstream through the "glades," or wooded lowlands that are navigable only in spring. Then we'll float back downstream to the Weinholds', where we'll have lunch, then hike to the top of Louis' Bluff, a rocky and wooded promontory with a breathtaking view - a bluff that tells that fascinating human and geologic history of Wisconsin.

May 21 - Lower Wisconsin River "AIS Action Day"
Don't let the zebra mussels get you down! This event combines aquatic invasive species (AIS) education, paddling on the Lower Wisconsin River, and fun!  We'll paddle from Prairie du Sac to Ferry Bluff, stopping along the way to identify invasive species, learn about particular AIS of concern, and play "river bingo!" Afterwards, we'll gather in August Derleth Park in Sauk City for snacks and refreshments.

June 11 - Fools Flotilla To the Yahara Waterfront Festival
HEAR YE! HEAR YE! Let it be declared that on this day of Saturday the eleventh of June there will take place upon that good water known as the Yahara, a grand flotilla of fools.  Verily will those vessels known sometimes as "canoes" be adorned by all good gentlemen and ladies who would care to join this water-bourne parade to attend the faire at Waterfront on the shores of Lake Monona.

June 18 - Whitewater on the Menominee
It's not the Grand Canyon, but it's pretty thrilling whitewater in the middle of the Flatlands. Hosted by Kosir's Rapid Rafts, you'll bounce and bop your way through Piers Gorge on the Menominee.  RSVP by May 15 (trip will only go forward if we are able to get enough folks to fill a raft).

Look At This Dirty Picture!
This dirty picture gets the River Rat's dander seriously up. This is a bat's-eye view (well, okay, hawk's-eye view; bats don't fly this high) of the city of Green Bay, where the Fox River disgorges its red-brown tide in the Green Bay of Lake Michigan. The picture was taken April 15.

...what you see is soil, washed off thousands of acres of land upstream, washing into Green Bay, where it does no one any good.

First Asian Carp Found in Lower Wisconsin River

On Wednesday, WI Department of Natural Resources' researchers collected a grass carp (this is not the high flying carp that knocks people out of their boat) while shocking the Lower Wisconsin River.

This is the first report of this non-native invasive species in the Wisconsin River. However, the grass carp is not new to the area...
