2011 TES Veterans Day
Students across Kenston observed Veteran's Day in different ways.  For the seventeenth year, third graders have invited Veterans that they know to share their experiences with classmates. Third graders honored the Veterans by performing military and patriotic songs.

New School

Performance Index rankings

Rankings

Kenston ranked 35th out of 936 schools in new school rankings recently released by Ohio Department of Education triggered by House Bill 153.  The rankings are currently based on the performance index score. Additional factors will be added to rankings that will be released next fall.

What is the Performance Index?
The performance index rewards the achievement of every student, not just those who score proficient or higher.  All assessments have five  performance levels which include:  advanced, accelerated, proficient, basic and limited.  The percentage of students scoring at each performance level is calculated and then multiplied by the point value assigned to that performance level.

KMS kicks off S.T.A.N.D.

Motivational speaker, Reggie Dabbs visited Kenston Middle School to kick-off their new S.T.A.N.D. (Students Taking A New Direction) program.  S.T.A.N.D. has been established to focus on empowering youth and helping students be more accepting of others.  A committee comprised of students, teachers and staff is working to prevent and eliminate inappropriate agressive behaviors and improve the overall climate of the middle school.

Many of the students on the 2011-2012 S.T.A.N.D. Committee are current PEAK ambassadors.  The committee is comprised of Grace Cannon, Catherine Clawson, Lauren Gratto, McKade Hatfield, Jenna Korenowski, Tommy Kregenow, Olivia Leone, Hannah Markel, Hunter Neal, George Quay, Cailee Rendlesham, Drew Sanders, Ellie Schabel, Patrick Sheehan, Sam Slezak, Theo Stokes, Emily Tewksbury, Faith Walls and Stephanie Yoho.

Food for Thought
Play Blue

Play Blue, Promoting Learning through Active Youth, incorporates wellness goals and "New Physical Education" curriculum with an emphasis on nutrition and education.

Play Blue is not just part of gym class.  Many teachers across the district are finding that mixing physical activity into regular class work helps to stimulate the brain and increase attention and focus.  These "Brain Breaks" are short activity breaks using coordinated movement and, typically, aerobic activity to stimulate the brain.  Dr. Dan Lawler, consultant for the Exercise 4 Learning organization, recently presented to Kenston faculty.  He stated that "Brain Breaks" are transition strategies, that invest a little time for excercise and has greater returns in students' attention, behavior and help learning.
