A Teachable Moment
Adams Weyrick's, 2003 KHS graduate, return from teaching in Japan due to earthquake provided a special opportunity for 4th grader in Mrs. Kristine Edwards' and Mr. Chad Rosko's classes. He talked to students about life in Japan as a culminating activity following their reading Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Coerr. He also gave them a hands-on calligraphy demonstration. |
A Kiss for a Good Cause
Gardiner Early Learning Center principal, Mrs. Marilyn Kahle again challenged her kindergarters and their families to donate over $1,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of America. Students surpassed that goal raising over $3,000 so Mrs. Kahle kept her part of the deal and kissed GiGi, a miniature therapy horse. Gardiner Early Learning Center students have supported The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for the past nine years donating over $18,000. Students participated in a penny war and charted their daily totals.

Cranes created to help Kids
Timmons Elementary third graders volunteered their time to participate in a service learning program during recess creating paper cranes using the Japanese art of origami. For each crane received the Benzos Family Foundation will donate $2 (up to $200,000) to the Architecture for Humanities reconstruction efforts in Japan. The goal is to collect over 100,000 cranes that will eventually be woven into an art installation, a symbolic gift from the youth worldwide to the children of Japan. |
