Tick-Tock

ticks on hand

Get to a doctor right away!

Summertime in the mountains is a wonderful thing. It does, however come with some tiny hidden dangers - ticks. Whether bush-whacking up to a high mountain lake or rolling around on the grass in your yard, a tick could hitch a ride on your skin.

Lyme Disease from a tick bite can be a very long, debilitating illness and recovery if not detected early. The sooner you get to a doctor, the better!

The Lyme Disease bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, normally lives in mice, squirrels and other small animals. It is transmitted among these animals and to humans through the bites of a black legged tick, or deer tick (Ixodes pacificus).

Check yourself, family members and pets often during your outings and again thoroughly afterward.

If you find an engorged tick, contact your doctor or veterinarian immediately. Carefully remove the tick at the head with a tweezers as close to the skin as possible.

Engorged ticks look very different -

Eeeeuuuuww!

As careful as you are, you may miss one, so call your doctor if you develop any of the following Lyme Disease symptoms, including:

-Rash with a bulls-eye pattern

-Fever and chills

-Body aches and headaches

-Other flu-like symptoms

-Pain and swelling of the joints

-Paralysis, numbness and weakness

-Neurological problems

To reduce your chances of getting a tick bite:

-Wear light colored protective  clothing to easily see them

-Avoid deep wooded areas and tall  grass

-Walk in the middle of the path

-Wash your hiking clothes before  wearing them again

-Shower after your adventure

Enjoy your time in the outdoors and don't pick up any tiny hitch-hikers!

Helpful Hint

for Saliva Testing

seed spitting

Failed your spit test? No worries!

Simply rinse your tubes and straws with hot tap water, let them air-dry and start over the next day.

It is important to get all the saliva samples done in the same day at the subscribed time, and it takes a bit of forethought. If you get distracted, relax and try again.

If the straws provided seem awkward, snip a 2 inch section off a regular sized straw and go for it. This is one test everyone can pass with flying colors!

Greetings!

The 4th of July holiday brings thoughts of independence and personal freedom. While we live in a society where the idea of health and fitness is wildly popular and we have multiple choices available to "create" our own health, actually very few of us do. Becoming a truly healthy person in the U.S. can be difficult. It is easier to buy a greasy burger on a street corner than a healthy sandwich or salad. Healthy choices have been made more difficult than they should be. Our society is wired to make us sick, overweight, depressed, and stressed out.

The US currently produces more obese, chronically ill and depleted people than it does vital, fit, resilient ones, and this trend is worsening. Two out of three US adults are overweight or obese. A growing number of us are reliant on pharmaceuticals whose side effects and interactions undermine our health and quality of life.

Our children too are becoming ill and prescription dependent at ever-younger ages, and their life spans are being shortened as a result. Our current medical system spends approximately 75% on the treatment of chronic health conditions that could be better managed with lifestyle modifications. Our current food system is a mess and getting worse. Genetically modified foods (GMOs) are entering our food supply at increasing rates and the FDA does not think we need to know when we are consuming these foods. Your are probably eating it now and unaware that you are doing so. We need to focus more attention toward nutrition. The average physician receives an average of 2.5 hours of nutrition education during medical school. Food is fundamental to your health and to the health of the world.

For too long we have allowed ourselves to be overprescribed, overfed, under informed, and overindulged. We've grown passive, expecting effortless cures to come from the outside - not within as the result of good self care. We can change this mixed-up reality and reclaim our well-being. We can change this - together!

Every day, more and more of us are waking up to the realization that no one is going to save us but us. We need to rise up to take back the power for our own well being.

None of us can afford to sit this challenge out. None of us deserves to live less than the best, healthiest life. So raise your standards and re-stake your claim to a vital body and mind.

Choosing a healthy way of life involves making some revolutionary choices, and it also has revolutionary results. Because when you change your health for the better, you change the lives of everyone around you for the better too. In a very real way-you change your world.

It is time we face the reality that unless we're a part of the solution, we're part of the problem. I have included a couple of resources for you to explore this concept further. Check out the Food Revolution and see their manifesto for thriving in a mixed-up world at www.revolutionaryact.com.

I also encourage you to participate in The Food Revolution Network. The host John and Ocean Robbins have gathered 23 visionaries that make up the top food experts and activist in the world.   If you would like to get together with these revolutionary thinkers and visionaries in the comfort of your own home-this is your opportunity. Go to www.foodrevolution.org and register now for the Food Revolution Summit.

I recommend participation if: you take care of your body and think the quality of your food matters; you want your children to have access to healthy food; you don't want to get cancer or have a heart attack; you like to shop at our local farmers market; you want to know how what you eat connects to the planet; you want your family and friends to eat better and you don't know how to tell them without seeming like a nag; and you want to enjoy food you can trust for a lifetime.

I wish you good food and a great life!

Happy summer,

Lynn
