Talking to Your Kids About 911

Young children often look to their parents for help in interpreting scary or confusing events.    Here are some tips on talking to your young children about the events of September 11 as the a

911 LOGOnniversary nears.    I would encourage you to download the pdf file at the bottom of the page.    In addition, be very careful about some of the more graphic images that may be shown on the news and other shows.    Our thoughts are with all of those who lost loved ones on that day.

Check out our web site to find some great tips for communicating the events of 9/11 to your kids.

The Pencil

Does your child struggle with handwriting?   Does your child have an awkward pencil grasp?   Some children use awkward pencil grasps because they are unsure of how to position their fingers on the pencil or how to move their fingers with the right amount of pressure to write successfully.

PencilYou can help by trying to teach your child the proper way to hold a pencil. Ideally, the child should have only the thumb and index finger on the pencil, with the middle finger resting under the pencil and the ring and little fingers curled up in the palm. You should see movement of the joints of the fingers.

If your child is unable to maintain this type of grasp on the pencil there are a variety of pencil grips commercially available. Find what works best to support the development of a proper pencil grasp and handwriting will become less of a struggle.

For any questions regarding your child's handwriting or any other OT needs, please stop by Hearing and Speech of WNY. We are located right next door to Williamsville Pediatrics.

What is the Flu?

The influenza (flu) virus causes serious illness that may result in hospitalization or death.    It mostly affects the breathing system, but may also affect the whole body.    The flu season usually starts in the fall and ends in the spring.

People can get the flu many times in their lives.    Flu viruses are always changing over time and from year to year.    Three seasonal flu viruses are expected to make children sick

Check here for the vaccine status in our office and more information on influenza.
