Parenting Book Review - April/May

"A Mind At A Time"  by Dr. Mel Levine.

(A Resource for parents whose children have been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD orA Mind at a Time by Dr. Mel Levine even Asperger's syndrome)

Dr. Levine is a well-known developmental pediatrician, who specializes in children with different styles of learning.  He discusses how some children have strengths in visual learning or auditory learning, but also how these can

be weaknesses in other children.

Every child is unique and he shows that their brain wiring does not always fit into the mold of typical school learning patterns.  These children can become frustrated and feel worthless and thereby give up and become depressed.  By explaining how parents and teachers can encourage a child's strengths we can help them become achievers instead of frustrated failures.

Contents:

The Ways of Learning - discussing how the mind processing systems work

Our Attention Control system - talks about the mental energy system works  and how the intake and output can affect attention - especially in school and subjects that do not engage our attention.

Our Memory System - goes over short term memory and active working  memory and how we can help them "Remember to Learn and Learn to Remember."

Our Language System, Motor System, Spatial and Sequential Ordering System as well as Our Social Thinking System are all explained and the last chapters helps you identify your child's issues and gives helpful techniques

to foster their strengths and help them overcome their roadblocks.

Noise in the Classroom

Did you know that the average elementary school noise levels vary between 50 and 70 dB; that is close to the sound level of a vacuum cleaner!

In order to fully learn and understand what is being said in the classroom, both classroom acoustics and the student's ability to hear are vital. Acoustic barriers to communication in the classroom are disruptive to learning, affecting speech understanding, student behavior, reading and spelling ability, attention, concentration and overall academic achievement. For students with hearing loss these noisy classroom conditions make it even more challenging to effectively listen and learn.

Car Seat Guidelines 2011

One of the most important jobs you have as a parent is keeping your child safe when riding in a vehicle. Each year thousands of young children are killed or injured in car crashes. Proper use of car safety seats helps keep children safe. But with so many different car safety seats on the market, it's no wonder many parents find this overwhelming.   You can find a summary of the guidelines on our website.
