The Holiness of the Shabbat

DISTURB US, Adonai, ruffle us from our complacency;

Make us dissatisfied. Dissatisfied with the peace of ignorance, the quietude which arises from a shunning of the horror, the defeat, the bitterness and the poverty, physical and spiritual, of humans.

Shock us, Adonai, deny to us the false Shabbat which gives us the delusions of satisfaction amid a world of war and hatred;

Wake us, O God, and shake us

from the sweet and sad poignancies rendered by half forgotten melodies and rubric prayers of yesteryears;

Make us know that the border of the sanctuary is not the border of living and the walls of Your temples are not shelters from the winds of truth, justice and reality.

Disturb us, O God, and vex us;

let not Your Shabbat be a day of torpor and slumber;

let it be a time to be stirred and spurred to action.

Baruch atah, Adonai, m'kadeish Ha Shabbat

A Message from the Rector

 Bishops

Bishop-elect Fisher with Bishop Scruton at a Diocesan Council Meeting on June 7

On June 2, 2012, at a special electing Convention, the clergy and elected lay delegates from acrossRich Simpson, Rector our Diocese gathered at Christ Cathedral in Springfield. As readers of this newsletter know, I had (along with many others) invested time and energy in producing the final slate of candidates to our Diocese. In my capacity as Chair of the Search Committee I was asked to say a prayer, which can be found here.

But at this gathering, I was simply one priest among many-praying with everyone else that God's will might be done through us in choosing the next Bishop to lead us in the years ahead. It was a joy to be a part of this process, and I think we did choose well. I know that all of you will continue to pray for Doug and Betsy, our Bishop-elect and his spouse, along with Gordon and Rebecca as they navigate this transition toward retirement.

As they say in Congress, I am going to cede my remaining time to the gentleman and gentlewomen from our parish who participated with me on this day.

Rich

From Jacqueline Galvinhill (Youth Delegate):

When I was asked to be the youth delegate for the Convention I was ecstatic! I looked forward to the election of our new Bishop for months. I was able to go to the Walkabout and get to know the candidates a little better. When the day finally arrived I traveled with the other delegates from St. Francis to the Cathedral. I had been to the Cathedral before, but as a member of my youth group. This time I was returning as a youth delegate...I felt older. It came to my attention that the last time this Convention met I was only a few months old, it put the whole thing into perspective for me...this really was a once in a lifetime kind of opportunity for me.

Before the voting began, everyone gathered in the basement for coffee and other refreshments. It was amazing to me to see so many Episcopalians gathered together...and these were only the select few who had been chosen to represent their congregation! As the voting began, I was very anxious. I had never voted on anything before and the whole experience was new and exciting. The waiting after taking the ballots was the worst part...we were all so curious to know the outcome. Our third ballot finished just before lunch so we were sent off while the results were determined. When we returned we were hopeful that the election had been made and we were not disappointed. I left knowing that I had been part of something truly amazing. My vote counted and I had just been part of something that would forever change the life of Doug Fisher and I look forward to seeing what he can do as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Western Massachusetts.

From Dick Delorme:

The Convention to elect a new bishop was an exciting day for me.  As someone that is very interested in politics, I was curious to see what the Episcopal Church's election process was like in addition to being awed by the responsibility associated with electing our next bishop.  Everyone there seemed excited and energized by what was happening.  Having the voting take place in the context of the Eucharistic service made it seem truly special.  Waiting for the results of the first round of voting was the most tense time for me.  How would the laity and clergy vote?  What would happen if each group was looking for a different type of leader?  Those questions were going through my mind as we waited for the first round results to be announced.  To my surprise, the results of lay and clergy voting had the candidates in almost the same order.  From that moment on, I felt sure that, no matter which of the top two candidates would end up being selected, the Holy Spirit was guiding us to the right choice for us at this time.  Having done the work that we were there to do, we completed the celebration of the Eucharist.  As a member of St. Francis, it was particularly special to participate in the service since Gordon is our former pastor and he was assisted by Deacon Audrey Cronin.

From Dawn Rooke:

I am thrilled  to have been able to take part in the election of our next Bishop!  From the beginning, attending the listening events which helped determine the diocesan profile, and the walkabouts which allowed an opportunity to get a feel for each of the candidates, to the joy-filled, spirit-filled atmosphere of the election, I felt honored to be able to be a part of this process. As a delegate for St. Francis I felt well informed every step of the way.  I was surprised to learn that the actual election would take place in the midst of a worship service at Christ Church Cathedral in Springfield.  I think that contributed to both the solemnity and joyous feel of the events of the day. One of the greatest realizations, or rather reminders for me from this whole experience was that we at St. Francis truly are just a small part of the  larger body of Christ,  something we talk about  but don't often experience beyond our Holden walls.  We are not alone, but are joined in faith by many others; Episcopalians for whom the Word, the Sacraments, and Reason, ring true.

From Robin Carlo:

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in the election of our new bishop. At first I was a bit daunted by the responsibility, but the organization, efficiency and sense of cooperation that permeated the process allowed me to truly focus on the gifts and experiences of each candidate. The search committee provided a wealth of information about each of the five finalists, helping me to make an informed decision and also showcasing the wonderful work being done across the country in our denomination.  It was clear from the start that this was not so much an election as a discernment process. Media was effectively used to educate rather than to condemn. The respect with which the candidates viewed our diocese and each other was refreshing. The delegates, although obviously not all of the same mind, were thoughtful and respectful of each other's viewpoints. As we moved to a second and then a third vote, the prayerfulness and thoughtfulness were palpable. I wish our new bishop could have been in the room when the final decision was announced; I am quite sure his heart would have been warmed by the joyous welcome given!

Sermons On-Line

Did you know that most sermons preached at St. Francis Church are available on the Church's website within a day or two after being preached, in two formats: both a written manuscript and as MP3 audio files?  You can see the archive by clicking here.

Many of us are away during the summer months but you can, if you wish, continue to stay connected in this way.

The 77th General Convention of The Episcopal Church will be meeting in Indianapolis from July 5-12, 2012. The rector will be there as a clergy deputy representing our diocese. For those interested, deputies from our Diocese (both clergy and lay) will be writing a blog that will be updated at least daily. You can check it out at:  http://westernmassmusings.blogspot.com/

Mission Matters

Military Packages

 We are beginning a new ministry at St. Francis which is really an extension of our prayer ministry for those serving in the military. In addition to prayers, we are going to start a program of staying in touch with these individuals. When military service requires deployment overseas, we will be sending care packages. For those serving in the States, we will stay in touch with greeting cards.

When packages are being planned, a list will be posted in the Narthex of items to be included, and a place established for donations to be dropped off. Greeting cards will be placed in the Narthex, as well, and appropriate notice given when they are available for signatures.

We are hopeful that personal contact from the St. Francis family will be an encouragement to these individuals serving in the military, and a reminder that they are remembered even when far from home. If you have any questions, please contact Ruth Webb at ruthwebb@aol.com

Thank you......

Thank you so much for your donation of $900 to the summer project for refugee children in the Springfield Schools.  We were able to raise more than was required for the field trip. so the school will be able to provide some additional closer field trips to museums and a zoo in this area.  The school officials were beyond delighted at the response from Episcopalians.  We hope to have photographs in E-Matters this summer from the trip.

Blessings,

Sarah Shofstall

Canon to the Ordinary

We are grateful to you for your recent donation of your Maundy Thursday collection to the Rutland Food Pantry.  We have had a significant increase in people using our services, so the money will go toward buying meats to fill our freezer.

May God bless you always!

Organ Update

As of July 3 , 2012 97 households have contributed $37,350 toward our goal. Along with the $1900 that remained in the Capital Campaign Fund, and an additional $1,125 pledged but not yet received, this leaves us with approximately  $15,000 left to raise. The response so far has truly been amazing.

Tentatively, we expect to be able to hear the organ played in worship beginning on the weekend of July 14/15, including a prelude and two hymns at both weekend liturgies.  While the formal dedication will come later in the fall, we are excited about hearing the instrument played.

It's Lemonade Time!

During the months of July and August, after the 9:00 a.m. service, we will be serving lemonade, either in the narthex or the Memorial Garden, depending on the weather.  If you are interested in serving lemonade after any of these services please sign up in the narthex.  Lemonade is provided and instructions will be posted in the kitchen.  No food is necessary.

To All Who Use the Church Kitchen

Recently at a routine Health Department  Inspection it was discovered that the thermometers that had previously been purchased and placed in the freezer and refrigerator had been removed.    We are required by law to have these.   New ones are being purchased; please do not remove them when "cleaning up!"

And a reminder not to leave any food in the church refrigerator.  No one lives here to eat leftovers, and it is a violation of the health codes.

2012  Wachusett Church League Softball

If you are interested in playing on the St. Francis Softball Team please sign up in the narthex.  Rules and Schedules are available there as well.   All games are on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. at various Holden fields.

Holy Baptism

The next scheduled dates for Holy Baptism are Sunday, September 2nd and the weekends of October 6/7, Feast of St. Francis, and November 3/4, All Saints'.

If you are interested in scheduling a baptism please contact the church office at 508-829-3344.

Confirmation Class 2012/2013

Confirmation at St. Francis is open to those going into the 10th grade or older.  Letters will be going out to this  fall's 10th graders.  If you are going into the 10th grade or higher  and have not received a letter, and would like to be in this year's class, please contact Karen in the church office at 508-829-3344 or email stfran@verizon.net.

Annual Church Mouse Fair

It's that time again! Well, it's not until Saturday, October 27th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12 Noon, but the planning and crafting goes all summer long! Feel free to start putting those attic treasures aside knowing they'll once again go to a good home and a good cause!

This year's Official Church Mouse Fair Committee currently has 11 dedicated members, but we're always looking to expand to include anyone from high school on up who wants to participate in the planning stages of the event.  It's lots of fun and a great way to meet now and old friends. :)  The more the merrier!

Also, even if you don't want to become an official mouse on the planning committee, you're certainly welcome to join us for our crafting sessions which will be starting in the middle of July.  We're still working on the day and time that will be most convenient each week for everyone, but we wanted to start to get the word out now.  We'll be making announcements at the services and in the bulletins once we know what's what.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, are planning to do crafts at home, or would like to find out more about this event, please feel free to contact Donna Alarie at (508) 847-8574 or email at Donnachesspals@gmail.com

Prayer Shawl Ministry

A small intimate group met this month. Whilst busy knitting we had many conversations on various topics. Always a fun gathering. Thank you ladies for your time and dedication.

Soldiers Helpers

There is a soldier from Rochester, NY, serving in Afghanistan and has 20 men with him on the front line. Unfortunately they do not receive many packages from home. One of their urgent requests was for pillows! These have now been donated. The issue now is ----- it will cost around $250 to ship across the ocean. HELP! Any ideas on how we can assist? Thanks much

PS4FS (Prayer Shawls for Fallen Soldiers)

During the summer months our prayer shawl count usually falls BUT not this past month. We were able to send 111 shawls to Dover. We have reached another milestone as we have reached 6,078 shawls mailed since October 2007. What an achievement!

SUMMER FUN!!!

During the long hot months if you are interested in learning a new activity. Please think about learning to knit. We have very adept ladies in our group who would be more than willing to share their expertise with you. Please feel free to come along to our monthly meeting. The third Monday of each month at 10 - 12 (or any time in between) all year round. Do join us. Some of us like to lose ourselves in piles of yarn. Though our thoughts may be tangled, the repetitive work of knitting or crocheting has a way of silencing worries to a quiet hum. Nagging problems seem to fade farther and farther away with each row of stitches. Hope you can find time to come join us.

Save the Date!!

Our annual Parish Picnic will be held on Sunday, September 16th, right after the 10:00 a.m. service.  This rain or shine event is a great opportunity to share a meal and reconnect with your St. Francis family after the summer.  More details will follow later this summer, mark your calendars now!
