 A Message from the Rector

Rich Simpson, Rector

In his wonderful poem, "The Journey of the Magi," T.S. Eliot's narrator reflects back upon the experience of finding the child in the place where the star led him. He writes:

All this was a long time ago, I remember,
And I would do it again, but set down
This set down
This: were we lead all that way for
Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly,
We had evidence and no doubt. I have seen birth and death,
But had thought they were different; this Birth was
Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.
We returned to our places, these Kingdoms,
But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation,
With an alien people clutching their gods.
I should be glad of another death.

One of the great mysteries of our faith and of life itself is that birth and death are not as different as we might initially think. Or perhaps, more accurately, at some point it begins to dawn on us that life is not a straight-line that begins at the moment of birth and ends with our last breath. As the Prayerbook says, "in the midst of life we are in death..." (BCP 492) In the circle of life, birth is a transition toward death, and death is a transition toward new birth. Each of us is on our own journey to Christ and the path is rarely "as the crow flies." Usually it takes us on a far more labyrinthian route.

But like the magi, we also journey together as a faith community. The magi, after all, did not travel alone. Like them, each of us bear gifts as we set out to find the Christ-child. The Scriptures don't tell us how many there were, just that they brought three gifts (So tradition assumes there were three.) Two or three or more, they (and we) gather together in Christ's name and where that happens, God is with us. That is the gift and promise of Christmas.

This great season of Epiphany-of insight and light and new possibilities-is upon us. On the first Sunday after Epiphany (the weekend of January 7 and 8) we will remember the Baptism of Our Lord in the Jordan River, and celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at 10 a.m. and renew our own Baptismal Covenant at all three liturgies. As always, this season gives us a chance to reflect on our journey as Christ's people at the corner of Phillips Road and Highland Street.

As you will read elsewhere in this news, we will have our Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 22 after the 10 a.m. service. It provides us with a chance to reflect on where God has led us this past year and to dream with God on where we are being led next. That agenda will include a report from some of those who most recently travelled to El Salvador. Four groups of pilgrims-twenty-one persons in all-have now travelled there with Fundacion Cristosal. Among other things, they will update us on what has been happening there, and to them, as they have set out on this journey.

And so the journey continues, always with the promise of God's presence-in birth, in death, in the new life that is ours in Jesus Christ.

Blessings and peace in a New Year of Grace,

Rich

Stewardship Wrap up

As 2011 draws to a close, I want to update the parish on stewardship for 2012. We have 162 pledging families for 2012 (up 5 five from last year) and total pledges = $350,254, just up over last year's pledges. As you look around the pews on a Saturday night or Sunday morning and see all the new faces as well as the familiar ones, you realize how blessed we are St. Francis. Thank you for your faithful response to our life together in 2012.

2012 will bring changes to our life together as Jill moves on to work with the diocese while continuing her work with our youth and we will welcome a new associate at some point during the year. Our church school continues to thrive, opportunities for outreach in the local community and further afield are growing, we continue to be good stewards of our buildings and grounds and pay the oil and light bills. The work that we are called to do challenges us personally and as a community and it is exciting to see it unfold. All of this takes time, talent and treasure. If you have not pledged for 2012, there is still time to do so.  If you are unable to pledge at this time but would still like envelopes to give as you are able, please contact the church office and let Karen know.

Associate Rector Search

The search committee is currently drafting a job description for an Associate Rector and we welcome your input! Where is the Holy Spirit calling us to be? Where could an Associate Rector best assist St. Francis? What matters to you most in a priest?

Please share your thoughts with members of the search committee following each service on the weekend of January 14/15, or send an email to Cynthia McIntyre (mcintyre.c@comcast.net).

St. Francis Men's Ministry

Men's Ministry
On Saturday, December 10th nine men from St. Francis joined eleven men from Immanuel Lutheran to help a family in need.

A new mission ministry has been formed at St Francis that would benefit those in need within our congregation and also reach out into Holden and the surrounding towns. It is a Men's Ministry that will be made up of men from our parish. The mission is simply: To serve those who aren't able to keep up with tasks around the house and who have insufficient means to cope on their own.

An initial project was undertaken in conjunction with the Men's Ministry at Immanuel Lutheran Church in early December. It was clear at that time that there was significant interest within the ranks of men at St Francis to pursue this ministry further. It was a very rewarding day and the work we did was tremendously appreciated by the home owner.

The idea for the ministry would be to meet one Saturday morning per month for fellowship from 8:00-8:45 and then go to the work projects from 9:00 to 11:00. There will be a meeting of all interested parties on Saturday January 14, 2012 at 8:00. We will have coffee, refreshments and discuss the types of projects we will take on, which will really be based on the skills of the men volunteering. Ideally we will develop a roster of enough men so there will never be pressure to attend every month. Another discussion point will be the significant challenge of finding work to be done. We have a standing invitation to work with the Men's Ministry from Immanuel Lutheran Church, so there should always be a need for us to serve.

Please join us for this meeting or ask Bryan Diehl any questions you might have about it. bdiehl@wm.com or 508-829-4835 (home) 508-962-3690 (cell)

Adult Confirmation/Reception

Each year, in addition to the youth in our parish who are confirmed at the Bishop's Visit, there are adults who can be either confirmed or received by the Bishop into the Episcopal Church. The details of which group a person falls into have to do with which part of the Body of Christ one is coming from: those who come from denominations such as the Roman Catholic Church, who were confirmed by a Bishop get "received." Those who come from Protestant denominations where confirmation is celebrated by the local pastor are "confirmed." Either way, the preparation is the same. There is sometimes a third group as well, and this includes people who were confirmed at a young age in The Episcopal Church who feel they would like to re-commit as adults: these persons can re-affirm their commitment to Christ publicly after a time of preparation. (See pages 418-419 in The Book of Common Prayer)

Our bishop, The Rt. Rev. Gordon P. Scruton, will be coming to St. Francis next on Saturday, May 19 to the 5:00 p.m. service. During the Seasons of Epiphany and Lent, classes will be meeting for any and all adults who wish to prepare for Confirmation, Reception, or Reaffirmation. There will be an informational meeting of all interested persons on Wednesday, January 25th at 7:30 p.m. in the narthex. At this meeting, the rector will outline the program and we'll find a set time to meet that works for those who wish to be a part of this. Please sign-up on the sheet in the narthex and plan to attend this meeting if you have any questions about becoming a member of St. Francis.

If you are interested but cannot make this meeting, please speak with the rector beforehand.

From the Standing Committee of the Diocese

A Prayer for the Election of a Bishop

Loving God, we thank you for the gift of your Church. Empowered by your Holy Spirit, guide us as we seek the bishop of your choosing who will guide and equip our diocese in its mission, shepherd us as we seek to worship you and preach your Holy Gospel, and walk with us as we strive to be your hands and heart in the world. All this we ask through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

You can follow the process and get up-to-date information at http://www.wmassbishopsearch.org/

In particular, look for the Profile, posted on November 22. The committee is now receiving applications.

Worship on New Year's Eve and Day

This year, New Year's Eve falls on a Saturday and New Year's Day falls on a Sunday. We will celebrate all three services at their normal times: Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday morning at both 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. The focus of these liturgies will be  The Feast of the Holy Name. According to Luke's Gospel, on the eighth day, Jesus' parents took him to be circumcised and he was given the name, Jesus. (See Luke 2:21)

In the midst of the holidays, we end 2011 and begin a new year of grace by breaking the bread, and saying our prayers. Please join us!

Open Budget Meeting

 Wednesday, January 4th

The 2012 Budget, which is a plan for Mission and Ministry, will be presented to the Vestry and open to all in the parish to attend Please join us in the library at 7:30 p.m. (following the 7:00 p.m. Eucharist.)  All are welcome.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

This group sends our good wishes for a very happy holiday season to you all. Our meetings will start up again in January.

PS4FS (Prayer Shawls for Fallen Soldiers)

We've heard from Dover this week and they have requested more Shawls. Please continue to pray that all our service men and women will be kept safe, that their work will be of peacemaking and that they will be brought home soon.

Hats for Troops

The good news. Some troops will be home for this holiday season. BUT many are being sent on to Kuwait or elsewhere. Their mail has been stopped as of November 17th. The Chaplain does not have a forwarding address at this time. Several Congressman and Senators offices have been in touch with us asking if we had heard of any changes.

If anyone has a new address please let me know ASAP. This is a really big issue - the fact that they are basically cut off. So they will not receive any Christmas mail OR phone cards in order that they may phone home. We need to show our service people that we care and that they are not alone.  Thank you.

May you all share joy and wonder and have a healthy happy New Year
