RAP Session

Royalty Rate Trends in California

Royalties are payments made by mining companies to the owners of mineral interests in return for the right to extract minerals from their property.  As this relates to the construction aggregates industry, the royalty rates are influenced by a number of factors including supply and demand economics, quantity and quality of resource found on the property and proximity to the market.  EnviroMINE has completed a number of royalty rate surveys in California as part of an ongoing effort to track royalty rate trends in the construction aggregates industry.  This article describes the methods used to complete the surveys, factors used to determine royalty rates and different methods for calculating royalty payments.  Overall, royalty rates are rising and they appear to be influenced by the growing scarcity of production sites.
