Hawthorne student sends BookEnds a great note!

"BookEnds is a wonderful program for kids just like me, kids who love to read.  I felt great when I saw how many kids love to read at 107th Street School.

We started our BookEnds Service Learning project with an assembly where Gretchen, the BookEnds coordinator, asked us how we could advertise the program.  Some kids came up with silly ideas like making a TV commercial.  Others said that we should put up posters and make fliers.

A couple of days later, the whole 4th grade made posters to advertise.  We attached fliers to grocery bags and gave them to everyone in the school.

In the mornings of the collection, we held up signs and walked in front of the school.  We collected and sorted many, many books.  New Hawthorne

The collection was so big that in math class we found the mean, median, mode, range, and outliers of the books we collected.

When we got to 107th Street School, my friend and I were paired with a 2nd grade girl.  She enjoyed the books we read to her, and we felt great.  I also read to a first grade girl.  She got to keep the book I read to her.  BookEnds made many kids smile, and I am really proud of my school for donating so many books."

BookEnds and The Weingart Foundation

In April, BookEnds President Robin Keefe was part of a group of nonprofit thought leaders meeting at UCLA for the Weingart Foundations' brainstorming event:  Fortifying L.A.'s Nonprofit Organizations: Capacity-Building Needs & Services in Los Angeles County. We are proud of the longterm partnership between BookEnds and the Weingart Foundation.

What is BookEnds

BookEnds is a non profit organization about Kids helping Kids for Literacy and LeadershipBookEnds is built upon our belief in children.  We believe that every child has a right to be surrounded by books throughout their childhood to inspire, enthrall and excite them.  We also believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn to help.

Annually, nearly 20,000 students organize BookEnds book drives in their schools to recycle their quality children's books directly into the hands of kids in schools and youth organizations that are in desperate need of books. At BookEnds, we build the next generation of readers and leaders.  Contact us!
