"BookEnds is a wonderful program for kids just like me, kids who love to read. I felt great when I saw how many kids love to read at 107th Street School.
We started our BookEnds Service Learning project with an assembly where Gretchen, the BookEnds coordinator, asked us how we could advertise the program. Some kids came up with silly ideas like making a TV commercial. Others said that we should put up posters and make fliers.
A couple of days later, the whole 4th grade made posters to advertise. We attached fliers to grocery bags and gave them to everyone in the school.
In the mornings of the collection, we held up signs and walked in front of the school. We collected and sorted many, many books.
The collection was so big that in math class we found the mean, median, mode, range, and outliers of the books we collected.
When we got to 107th Street School, my friend and I were paired with a 2nd grade girl. She enjoyed the books we read to her, and we felt great. I also read to a first grade girl. She got to keep the book I read to her. BookEnds made many kids smile, and I am really proud of my school for donating so many books." |
