Orchestra Tour 2012 Coming up June 1st
Students in the Orchestra group will be traveling, along with their coach, Janice Mah, to play for the students of Pleasant Park Elementary school in the morning.
Then they're off to the Ottawa International Children's Festival where they will be the opening act for a show called Black Violin (a cool combination of classical and hip-hop music created by Kev Marcus, Wil B and their DJ TK.) Drop in to the Festival on this day, if you can. To wind down the day the kids will get to watch a show at the festival, then go to circus school!
We hope they have a great touring day! Many thanks to Janice and the parent volunteers who will also be joining them.

Our Graduating Students
Congratulations and good luck!
These students also performed with our faculty at the Viva Suzuki fund raising concert in May.
Eric Kavcic
Eric is a proud graduating student of SuzukiMusic. Besides the majority of his life which is dedicated to practising flute, he also engages in musical theatre, choir, conducting and composing for a variety of ensembles, jogging and of course, homework. He is finishing his secondary years at a school known for its football (a sport which he has never played) and will be continuing his education post-secondary at Wilfrid Laurier University for music next year.
Gabriela Iznardo
Gabriela is 18 years old. She graduated from Colonel By Secondary School last year and is currently studying at the University of Ottawa. She began guitar lessons with Daniel Srugo eight years ago and joined the SuzukiMusic Guitar Program in 2008.
She received first class honors in the RCM examinations last year and this year, as well. Last August, she performed a solo for the Japan Benefit Concert and again this year at the Shenkman Arts centre. Gabriela received a Silver medal at Kiwanis competition last year and Gold medal this year. She has been participating in RCM examinations, solos and various performances with SuzukiMusic's Senior Guitar Ensemble. This guitar trio has also had the opportunity to perform for the Embassy of Spain and the Ottawa Guitar Society.
Last month she was accepted into the guitar program at the University of Ottawa and is excited to continue practicing what she loves and looks forward to the new experiences waiting ahead.

100 Days of Practice Bravo for completing this challenge!
| Pictured: Olivia Schnare, Rachel Mallard, Nathan Mezger |
A total of 8 students from Carol Deaville's studio, accepted the challenge from their teacher and completed 100 consecutive days of practice! Congratulations to: - Rachel Mallard
- Olivia Schnare
- Winton Schnare
- Nathan Mezger
- Justin Côté
- Isabella Mejias
- Kate-Lynn McGowan
- Heather McGowan
"It was hard. It made me practice more. I got through my pieces faster. It was a good challenge and fun. I'm happy I did it!" - Rachel Mallard
"I really liked decorating the calendar, and putting on stickers and hearts. I learned that it feels awesome when you get the hard work done, like when you do something complicated, and at first it is too hard. Then you learn it and it feels really awesome. Practice means hard and complicated but there is some fun in it. Playing the piece is fun." - Olivia Schnare "It was really hard to practice every day. We even took our instruments to Florida." Winton Schnare Mom (Janet) said: "I know he was proud of completing the work, and was pleased that he learned several new pieces during the period, moving ahead and gaining confidence." "It was very hard to practice 100 days in a row but it would be harder to have to go back to the beginning and start the 100 days again so I practiced every single day! Maybe I can get to 200!" - Nathan Mezger "The 100 day challenge really helped me a lot. I don't like to miss my practices any more!" - Justin Côté

Community Outreach News
NAC TuneTown - Instrument Petting Zoo
On Saturday, April 28th, after their morning group classes, a few students and their parents along with Margaret, Judy and Chantal, brought their instruments along and took part in the NAC's TuneTown pre-concert activities in the lobby, prior to the "Emily Saves the Orchestra" Family Adventures concert. Our kids did such a great job of sharing and demonstrating their instruments, as well as being the "teacher" to many youngsters arriving before the concert. Thank you to the Friends of the NAC Orchestra for this wonderful opportunity to share our love of music and Suzuki method learning with the community. Our next community outreach event planned will be a visit and performance by our students to the Orleans Festival in June. |

Summer Practice Tips from Judy Olmstead O'Regan
There is really no magic to practicing during the summer months. Practice is a discipline, so we just have to do it. Easier said than done when trying to juggle soccer games, day camp, family holidays and exhausted, sun-drenched kids!
Maybe some of these ideas will help: - Create and stick to a plan - 6 days a week is a plan; 3 is not. Kids get very frustrated when they lose half of their repertoire during the summer months.
- Do not negotiate with your child regarding practice. Once you do that, it will never stop and you will become frustrated
- Do take a holiday - work it into your plan. Be flexible - it IS summer.
- When given lemons, make lemon-aid. If your child breaks a finger at soccer (yes, it happened to my daughter), just practice with one hand or listen to the CD. Never break your routine.
- Hire an older student to help with practice a few days a week.Maybe it could be a babysitting/practice combination. (Ask you teacher to recommend a Suzuki Mentor)
- Make play dates with another musical family and do the practice together.
- Work towards putting on a concert for family you will be visiting this summer.
- Set a practice timer so that your child knows there is a limit to the session. If he loses concentration, the timer is stopped until he focuses again. (Check out Timetimer on-line)
- For older students, have them get together with others and play duets. Your teacher can advise you on music choices.
- Have fun and be silly sometimes:
- Practice in different places in the house or outside.
- Play all review pieces that start with "A", or another note
- All pieces that have the same composer
- All pieces that have the same key or time signature
- Create practice cards that your child can pick - 10 cards and the session is over.
- Have theme weeks
THINK LONG-TERM - not every practice session is a beautiful, bonding experience. Some days you just need to get it done.
Summer Music Camp - your kids will make friends, have fun, practice with the teacher and YOU get a break in the evening! Use lots of props - dice, toys to help with posture; string beads or Cheerios to mark off repetitions. Continue to educate yourself and look for ideas on-line. Google "Suzuki Music Games" and you will be linked to websites from other Suzuki studios. Suzuki teachers are happy to share ideas. Resource book - Helping Parents Practice, by Edmund Sprunger - This book is a must-read for Suzuki parents.
Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you at our first Group Class in the Fall. |
